Outgrown a 106 at 24? I'm 24 and am looking for a standard saxo vts . Funnest car I can find for sub 2k. I use my old vw tdi for commuting but should be halfing my mileage of 20k per year by car sharing.

I didn't realise s2000's had 50 litre tank. Just reading on s2000 forums, people posting their mpgs.
Ranging from 18 mpg when being cained
25 mpg when being driven around citys
and 30-35 mpg ish when doing a sensible commute... Changing gear at 4k or below and on motorways.
to be honest, if I can get 30 ish mpg (I will drive it like a granny) and my whole commute is motorway... then it's actually a fucking lot more economical than my 106 is at the moment.
although jr - who does £12 a day insurance?

yeh i love my 106 gti for track days / fun driving...
I hate my 106 for commuting / meeting non car people / turning up to 'adult / mature' environments with the exhaust popping and banging away.

I'll be keeping it standard. Got to be better than my current rust bucket!
For you how about Clio 182/ctr/LCR

have you thought about a newer impreza (serious) - the hawk eye ones are nice looking, and pretty damn cheap now.
Not that harsh on fuel if not turned up, thrashed. Saloon car looks, but still fun.

Yeh thats the issue with my 106 gti... it has been built for the track. V.loud exhaust, R888 tyres, stiff bilstein shocks / suspension, rear is stripped out...
- it gives a major 'boy racer' image to most people. It was never an issue, as I only ever drove to / from uni ... around town a bit and to and from tracks... I hated it when I was working on placement year though... used to get it ripped out of me by the old staff at work when i pulled in with loud exhaust.
For you how about Clio 182/ctr/LCR
182 ... may be an option (after fads fuel claim), performance wise not as good on track as my 106.
ctr ... may be an option, but can't see advantage over s2000... ctr performance wise not as good as my 106 on track.
LCR ... great in a straight line, never seen them going that fast on track, quite big / heavy.
I love my LSD on a FWD car on track... my 106 doesn't lose out to the aboves extra power due to its weight.

not a bad suggestion... I'll add it to my mental list.
I guess explaining the scoop to people could be a bit - but then most people would know why / what it is (most people know they're from rally heritage, however un car aimed they are)...
What mpg do they do?

A guy at work has a scoob like that and nobody has ever mentioned him being a boy racer etc
Tbh I think it's a plus not having a run of the mill car. If you want to totally fit in and give up on life get yourself a vectra rep mobile
The 182 or ctr would be a good compromise IMO

If you buy something that *should* get 30mpg plus when driven sensible then expect to get around 25mpg.
I did that when I bought my S3, thought I would be happy to sit in 6th and plod along but its so much easier to drive it cruising at 80/90 and not worry about mpg
Remember to factor in servicing with stuff like scoobys/S2000 etc. If your doing alot of miles it will soon hit service time and it won't be as cheap as the 106 to fix !
I currently have my 106 GTi sitting on my drive and im wondering what to do with it, seems mad to sell it for buttons but its not worth the expense of running it

I did think that in the past...
I said to my dad... 'It'd be good to buy a car to tow a trailer' ... 'that way I could have my 106 uninsured and use it just for track' ... 'In the future when I buy a proper race car and take it racing, I'll be able to tow it around with it'.
My dad then just said. Where the fuck are you going to keep a trailer?
I was like oh yeh. Not only finding space for another car, but a trailer too
My dad used to have his race car sat on the drive on the trailer, but then he didn't have me or my sister with cars.
You might be able to keep it in our lorry park for a small fee. Not sure what the rents are charging these days...

Rent a garage to keep the pug and get something half decent for 3k - 4k. I'm thinking Golf TDI or Audi A3.

Although ugly to most, adding to Adam's suggestion, I suggest the bugeye. Put the morrette's on and they look ok!

That is a shit example but I'll take a pic of my dads Tomorrow. Cheap as sin now, and great performance. As AK said, they can do decent mpg. My dad's WRX (tuned to 280 bhp) will do 25mpg when taking it easy. And the bugeye STi's can be had for £5k on good mileage

when I went to test drive and pick up my CTR I used norwich union
Can be done through their site and you can print off the documents. So nice and easy. Can have 1 - 3 days starting at £14 for the one day or £30 for 3 iirc
With the odd slip road and roundabout session and lots of sitting in traffic I usually see 250 miles to a tank in my CTR. I thats usually on about £33 of tescos 99.
Got nearer 300 on a run to the lake district.
So they are not bad. Although at brands I was doing a quarter of a tank every 15mins
PS if you have the money get a DC5

Be a bit different and buy something like a Renault Megan R26 or Mazda 3 MPS. Both very nice cars and very quick, the MPS has an added bonus of having an LSD as standard
