Because if you drove one back to back I know which one most of you would buy. Remove the badges and walla, the Vaux wins.

mk5 golf r32 is the same speed as my focus st in the real world
had a play with one tonight, rolling start 20mph, up to 120mph and there was nothing really in it.
but my god, the noise it made was car heaven i'd get the car along because of it.

Not looked at the Edition30 before... Thats a 2.0l Turbo yeah ?
i just fancied a 4WD option.. I know the S3 does the same but a new shape S3 is quite a bit more than the Golf.
I can understand that the VXR is probably more of a drivers car. but when am i really going to be pushing the car to the limits.
I drive from Uxbridge to Heathrow every day.. The M25 doesnt really have a handling circuit.. not that i know of anyway
Im just looking for a car thats quick, comfy and has some tuning possibilities. I know you can up the boost of the VXR and swap in for bigger turbo etc etc.. but does the chassis really lend itself for more power ?!?
Whereas the R32 with its 4WD (assuming its something like 70/30% front to back) with a supercharger will be more capable.
Plus as people have said. the V6 soundtrack is awesome
Just looking for peoples honest opinions.
dont want Vaux or VW bias.. just what you would do with your money
Cheers peeps

Steve drive them both and buy the one you like, as its very much down to preference.
General press rate the R32 and they did warm up to the VXR but its one of those things which do you see yourself living with?
Charging an R32 will be mega bucks compared to the plug and play tuning of the VXR though

oh yeah i know.. its around £7.5k
but its not something i would do straight away.
Just like the thought of a 3.2V6 SuperCharged.. kinda rolls off the tongue nicely

Well I know someone with a supercharged Mk4 R32 and it dont hang around!
Tbh I've never understood the shit people spout about the mk4 R32 being slow as they clearly are not! Dont feel it when inside but when you look down at the speedo you do realise its bloody quick. I was actually anti R32 as I just went with the general consiensus that it was lardy and heavy. Now I've actually been in a few really changed my opinion of them.
Both cars are very good either way so its just a matter of noise vs tunability?

I'd go for the golf, then again I wouldn't be racing around the streets like a nob jockey so wouldn't really care if it wasn't quite as fast as the other etc etc.

turbo charging an r32 seems a little more cost effective..
torque split btw, on haldex systems is 90/10 front/rear they arent the quickest to react either..
saying that there is available a haldex controller that will allow you to control the split upto 50/50 iirc

matt.. 90/10 thats rubbish. shouldnt really call it 4WD should they
If you can get something that changes it to a "true" 4WD then that would be mucho better.
anyway mister.. more burning issues.. NYE !! you coming over ?

Without driving either of them, i dont know why, but i would go for the R32. The sound it makes is awesome and i really like the look of them.
I wouldn't say no to an Astra VXR but if i was spending my own money it would be on a R32 but thats not taking into account the drive and the fun factor. I could drive both and find the astra is the car i would want. Test driving them is the key.

I'd say a Nurburg sounds pretty fucking fantastic as well. Had a go with one yesterday, the noise it made was utter sex.
