Frustratingly, the winning bidder has two bids at 1750 which means they did that and then proxied something higher but it hasn't increased to the increment because no one has bid against them at the higher amount. Could have another 50 quid there

I do that too.

The buyer may think that the offer is a good offer & end the auction early for you, which is good becuase someone else might be willing to pay much more than your offer & if you just put your offer into the auction you'd lose.

Also, with EBay now that you cant leave negative feedback for buyers, if I really want something i'll put in a stupid bid (something like £1,000,000) then see what the price ends up at. If its a price im happy to pay, I pay, if not I just ignor all contact from the seller, & they eventually re-list

Or if you're more cunning, like on my item there at 1750, you would bid 18000 then withdraw the bid saying the amount was wrong, then go back in at 1800. You'll see what the max proxy was while you were up at your blag bid, which will usually mean losing it when you go back in legitimately.
