May I add another reason to get a receipt is to show you've already paid. If he was to try it on with an insurer later on you'd have left a note admiting fault with no way to prove the repair was carried out and paid for. All causes grief in the long run and mess for no-claims bonuses, increased premiums etc..

Forget a receipt, cough up as it doesn't sound that bad but get him to sign something saying you paid him £200 for the damage to car and he is happy and will be taking no further action. Doesn't have to be an 'official' receipt.

i think you should pay up, you damaged his car, inconvinenced him as he had to get it repaired, he saved you the hassle and long term cost of going through the insurance, and you wont pay him?

sounds like your the one taking the piss to me

You left yourself open to this type of thing by agreeing to avoid your insurer. I agree that even at 200 quid it's still cheaper than going official.

I would imagine he's adding VAT because without a receipt it's not going through the books. If you want one, the company has to charge you it.

The £200 is going on a job that you agreed to fund unfortunately.

How am i taking the piss?? I have said i just want some proof that it cost that much. That isn't a lot to ask for. Even if he says right i haven't got a receipt but here is the number of the bodyshop i used. That would do me.

glad it wasnt my car you hit, i'd be well pissed off with your attitude

at the end of the day, he may have had to take a few hours off work etc to get it sorted, it is an inconvenience when this sort of thing happens you know, he could have insisted you went through the insurance, and £200 isnt exactly a fortune

My attitude?? Whats that about. There is nothing wrong with my attitude. I simply asked was i in the right to ask for proof of how much it cost. No where along the line have i refused to pay if proof is shown. Ask anyone who has met me on here i am as fair as the next man. Also £200 is quite a bit for me.

Fact is, £200 isnt a fortune to get away with this.

Fact is, no one wants to get 'done' or feel like they have been taken advantage of.

Bear in mind that he may not have a receipt due to it being a cash job, which is very common with Paint Monkeys.

I dont blame him for adding a few £ to the quote. He has had to go out of his way to get it repaired hasnt he!

He is now out of pocket and is having to wait around for you to pay up after doing you a favour by avoiding a rise on your insurance premium.

Think yourself lucky and pay up!

As peiople have said, he might not have a reciept because he's done it off the books.

IMO print off a page that says:

I accept £200 for repair of damages to *Reg no* on the *date*. By signing this document I agree that no further action will be taken.

Signed Iain M

Signed Izuzu Driver.

Get that one off your hands quick, insurance is something you don't really wanna be messing with.

Dont pay until u get proof that it cost that much, coz he couldav paid 50 quids and ur give him 150 pound for "the hassle"

If the guy u hit wanted to go through private, he needs to prove that he aint messing u about!

Stand your ground mate!

Just realised the date.

2 months this guy has been waiting. Id have been round your door many a time by now.

150£Corsa: So what if he has added £150 to the quote, he has had to do the running around, he may have lost a days work through it for all you know.

If he went through the insurance a claim is more than likely to increase the renewal quote by more than £200 considering this is a young driver.

Exactly. Probably an indication it didn't cost him £200.

The thing is i went into the pub where he owns and gave my address and insurance details. His wife gave me the contact details i needed. Then when i came out of work he said don't bother with insurance. I caused the accident i should decide how it gets sorted shouldn't I?? Its was far easier for me at the time to go through insurance. I didn't have access to £200 in one go. Find me someone who can.

I'm with John on this one. The price for spraying his bumper may seem a bit high, but at the end of the day he is doing you a favour, and you'll be paying a lot more than £200 in the long run. Pay the cash, and remember to get quotes in future.

Edit: And the fella has given you ample time to come up with the cash as well, I'd say he's being pretty fair! Considering he'll have to take time out to go and get it sprayed, if he makes a couple of quid in losses, you wouldn't argue with it in other circumstances.
