but seriously, for mixed XC and trail cliped are better. If your doing DH racing or hitting up tabletops with a superman seatgrab flats are better.
I've got V8s at the moment, but on a hardtail your better of being clipped up as the ride isn't as smooth as a full squishy.
Back in my racing days everyone use SPD's, but cos I came from BMX I used to use Atomic flats. They had 8mm long pins in them and were leathal, but they had a hell of a lot of grip. They were heavy too being solid steel

Yea, have a few. I never learned and hardly wore pads Not as bad as my mate who had Brookly Machine Works Shinburgers. He chipped a piece of bone out of his shin and pulled it out. Was a bit sick

Don't know if you've sorted anything yet but the next model down to Adam_B's Blast Deluxe, the Blast just got a 10/10 in What Mountain Bike. It retails at £485, Adams is the one to go for on your budget though as its equipped with hydraulic brakes. His retails at £550. Send me a u2u for more info and prices if your interested. Cheers Adam, ps I owe you a pint for putting R. Lee on to me!

Ryk, Adam
Kona are great value for money and are fantastic bikes.
Better than my old GT Avalanche and my brother's Specialized Rockhopper in price range.

i had a specialised hardrock GX about 10-12 years ago that i absolutely loved. great bike, even at a fairly basic rigid spec.
i now have a trek 4300 which again i love. couple of years old now. think it has rock shox Judy's and regular v-brakes for about £320 when i got it.
I really don't need much more than that.
