smoking makes stomach ones worse. A chemical in smoke relaxes a muscle in the stomach and lets acid past into the duodenom (sp), or something like that. Doc told me to quit years back, but i only just managed it this January.

Apparently 80% of them are down to bacterial reaosns but the other 20 are unexplained... stress, lack of sleep, smoking, bad diet etc are all thought to be causes :S

Heartburn is caused by oesophagus reflux, if you persist to eat spicy foods, tomatoes, most fruits, chocolate or drink coffee or most importantly alcohol, you will encourage the valve at the bottom of the oesophagus to relax and allow stomach acids into the oesophagus. This is what I have and when it persists the acid eventually infects the oesophagus and it swells up. Its the most painful illness ive ever suffered from, eating is sheer agony.
Bare in mind it could also be related to too much acid in the stomach overall. Peptac liquid is much better than Gaviscon or similiar, its an antacid. Doctors may prescribe omeprazole tablets which reduce the acid levels in your stomach, thats what im on.
If it persists you will probably require an endoscopy. I think im getting better though fingers crossed

I've had 2 of them.
Before the last one i was in the waiting room next to a very large tattooed man. He seemed abit on edge and abit nervous. He said to me "i guess your here for the same thing as me then?"
"i said, yeah endoscopy"
He said "yeah, camera up the bum, i dont fancy it"
