I'm not being a smart arse.
I was replying to paul and being serious.
My serious answer to your question is I wouldn't but it at all, if you choose to i'd recommend not paying over 2k.

I had a new front bumper fitted to my car after i run into the back of a Focus (5 car pile up, didn't go down as my fault). Was just a small crack. Does this make my car a Cat D??
If it does then yeah, i'd still buy it. Nothing wrong with it.
If the car looks straight, drives straight and has had a decent respray then i'd buy it. Cheap as chips that and done 30k. My 4 month old car has done 10k.

will this effect insurance tho?
Will effect the resale! generally no one will buy a cat d car. So if you buy it and want to sell it, you'll have trouble. Get him to know a grand or more off! or look else where!
for example...
Clio 172 cup's 03 with 40,000 miles go for say £6000
But there are 'cat d' Clio 172 cup's 04, with 20,000 miles for £3500-£4000! Just because NO one will touch them.
Same with CTR's etc.

Seems will has his head screwed on here.
I'd buy it, few years down the line sell it to a mate who knows the history etc.

You don't even know what a write off is so you are the worst person in this thread to listen to.

Yeah, the car was 3 months old when that happened. Replaced front bumper for me. Paid excess which i then got back in a cheque a few weeks later.

andrew you have no clue what you're talking about, making a claim on the insurance doesnt mean the car was a cat d write off

Andrew, you DON'T know what a cat d'd car is... it's not where you've made a claim.
It's been 'written off' - on the cheapest level (cat d) and repaired and put back on the road.
The insurance have annoucned it as 'written off' usually because the value of the damage is more than the car, but it's not too badly damaged, so the owner buys it back and fixes it.
I take John's points - I personally 'Would drive a cat d'd' car... I think it'd be fine! - however, I would never buy one, as I'd never be able to sell it on as most of the public are clueless and would avoid it like the plague.

lol nice little debate lol!
right,,,,
I really trust that he didnt know it was a cat d, he seems really upset about it all as he is buying a vehicle and now cant afford it i think.
anyway i got him down to 2350 which is pennys to be fair and its only a cat d so i recon its worth it.
im going to see it and if all is well then ill buy it and saved 950 quid from the price which was 3300 on ph.
end of day cat d states it has no structual damage meaning its basically things which are reparable, i know people who have crashed and booked it in a garage told the damage is cat c and just had the work done ad the next buyer is none the wiser, atleast i know its not cat c...
cheers tho everyone, shame every1 on here alwasy bitches tho!!!
