Can pick up a pre facelift one in your budget and imo are still quite an entertaining car to drive
Only downer is that it is £300 more to insure for me then a 182, however for the extra size and hope of jap reliability I am prepared to pay it.
Can always get facelift bits and bobs as part of a project type thing as well

the 182 we had was really bad.
owned it from new on a 05 plate, we had it in the garage on warrenty 13 times in 12 months. we covered 22,000 miles in this time and never had a trouble free month.
dont get me wrong either, i wouldn't take a car back for a little rattle, this was pure AA recovery breakdown jobs every fucking time.
i personally would recommend one to anyone.
my engine coverted corsa was a much more relaible car (red one on the cover of total vauxhall)
next im buying a van due to work commitments but after that i think with 8k i'd buy i audi S3 210bhp 4wd heated electric recaro's xenon's and very very realible.
P.S., just my 2p worth

Clio 182 Trophy is what I'd buy. I'm planning on getting one once the house is done up!
