The space shuttle Columbia was actually hit by a very rare and strange form of lightening. Alot of things can be explained very easily but it keeps people happy to believe other reasons, like aliens. I mean it would be very nice to think that there are aliens out there (there is but due to the scale of the universe will never be able to answer the question), unless the power of black holes is to be harnessed which wont happen due to their nature.
Same as religion really all can be explained yet people like to have faith elsewhere as it gives them hope.

The form of lightening in question is only present in the upper atmosphere an thus you will rarely hear of it taking down planes as it doesnt. Its just a case of the wrong time, the wrong place, it doesnt mean that aliens or god did it.

i dont believe in little green men and flying saucers altho i do believe there has to be other life out there in the billions of other galaxy's/solar systems.
What i mean is if we were able to evolve there has to be other life out there somewhere.
as for the 'UFO' videos well a lot of them are all a load of tosh, hoax's and rubbish editing, why would 'aliens travel all this way just to fly about for 10 seconds and dissapear?
A lot of 'ufo' sightings are actually explainable & or your mind playing tricks.
for example back in ww2 there were 1000's of 'ufo' sightings, these were due to the military testing new weapons & technology, Especially around the Nevada dessert & area 51.
