Thing is cosmo, there are alot of people who dont get cancer/die from smoking. Its not everyone who smokes gerts affected. The media have sensationalised the facts as they always do. Same with second hand smoke, it hasnt actually been proven EVER to cause cancer in any case.

Smoking is bad for you, make no mistake, but its up to the individual what they do. i stopped as i wanted to start running again and genrally be healthier.

I smoked for 7 years. I am a perfectly healthy 23year old as my doctor tells me! No ill effects from smoking.

Smoking isnt illegal so therefore people should have the choice to do with their body's what they want. Consenting intelligent adults should be given choice. Not a nanny state.

The general public are far from intelligent imo.

I can't see how anybody intelligent would smoke when it definitely goes towards killing you.

Yes some people aren't affected but the cons far outweigh the pros.

You smell, have yellow fingers and teeth and smokers are being looked down on more and more these days.

The only reason they aren't illegal is imo becuase the government make so much money from them.

Im not saying it should be illegal, and not telling anyone they shouldnt smoke. Im just saying Im very suprised that people do smoke when their are very obvious health issues.

I know this first hand too, my Grandad was on a phibrulator (sp?) for the last 20yrs of his life, 4 or 5 times everyday for about 15mins as couldnt breath properly. He had his leg amputated due to poor blood circulation which was down to smoking, and in the end it killed him due to his breating problems.

Yip, but then there are people who say oh but it won't 100% give me cancer.

People can smoke and kill themselves if they want.

As long as I don't have to come anywhere near them or smoke.

And people dont overeat? Eat unhealthy food? Take illegal drugs? Drink alcohol? Dont get anough excersise?

There is no fooling yourself in thinking you are defiantely going to live an extremely healthy life just because you disagree with smoking. Peoples view on life differs and yes its not what id call sensible, but then neither is drinking 5 cans of red bull a day, which tbh is FAR worse for your heart than smoking is, have you any idea the amount of caffine in there? Plus the 27 spoons of sugar contained in their fattening up your arteries.

Your comment about people smoking bieng stupid then openly admitting you are infact doing something much worse for your heart (and your wallet?) Same as about 20 cigs a day 5 cans of red bull.

Smoking is bad for you, but dont beleive the hype.
But red bull is also bad for you yet you drink it so are you stupid?

My ultimate goal in life is not to see how long i can live a gerriatric for.

oh and btw i gave up smoking, because i wanted to start running and make full use of my lungs, i did it without the use of gum, pathces or anything. I just gave up one day.
I dont smoke now, nor plan too. But the addiction is still present in my brain i guess.

My point is not aimed at having a punt over the internet, it is that everyone lives their lives differently, dont beleive all the hype, and let smokers get on with it.
Its THEIR choice.

The general public are stupid, but they will all know the risks of smoking, and if they dont they most likely didnt attend school, and therefore have larger things to worry about in life.

Where is your proof that Red Bull is harmful? Yes it has caffine in it (practically the same amount as a cup of coffee BTW) and is also full of sugar...but if it was so harmful I doubt you'd get Premiership footballers and top athletes all over the world drinking it. You dont see them having a quick smoke before they go out do you

And dont believe they hype about how bad smoking is....now that is a typical (ex)smokers comment. Im not saying Red Bull is good for you, but im sorry it is nowhere near in the same league as how bad for you smoking is.

OK then smokers...

What are all these benefits that outweight the health issues that you continue to smoke (not to mention the other effects)

Smoking is a social thing Cosmo, much like drinking, it's nice to sit in a pub, with a pint, and have a smoke.

I also gave up, but I miss it, it's very relaxing, I'm not going to start again though, as I can't afford it

Anyone who is a non smoker can say what they want about smoking, but it's not any worse than drinking loads, or eating fast food every day.

I bite my nails, that's harder to give up than smoking was

Some facts about Red Bull for you....

- A single 250ml can contains 82mg of caffine, and average cup of coffee contains between 80 and 180mg depnding on how it is made. So all you office workers drinking 3 or 4 cups a day drink more caffine than I do. Redbull is about 320mg a litre, coke is 126mg/l and these....
# Strongest (Starbucks): 1192 mg/l
# Espresso (Starbucks): 1088 mg/l
# Avg (Starbucks): 784 mg/l
# Weakest (Starbucks): 548 mg/l

All alot worse than Redbull.

- A single 250ml can contains around 5 spoon fulls of sugar (not the 25 or 50 something you were saying Jambo), which is less than in a glass of coke.

- Red Bull contains Taurine which most people say is bad for you, yet this is also a main ingrediant in infant milk formulas.

I smoke green occasionally and drink an awful lot but wouldnt say i was addicted. I dont feel any need to drink or smoke, just do it recreationally.

Im of the opinion you have to have an addictive personality to get addicted to stuff. Although im not stupid and can understand any1 can become addicted to an addictive substance.

Isn't nicotine meant to be one of the most highly addictive substances?

You have obviously never tried to give up something that you are addicted to. Giving anything up is a really hard thing to do but giving up smoking has to be one of the hardest. I've tried loads of times and always failed because deep down i dont want to. I couldnt be arsed putting myself through months of torture when i didnt want to quit in the first place. There are no benefits from smoking, its expensive and as someone has already mentioned, it makes your fingers yellow and makes you smell. I would never have started smoking if i was as wise then as i am now. Anyone who starts smoking when they are mature is dumb imo. But still, I enjoy smoking and for the time being I dont have any motivation to try to quit. I cant make you understand this, and you tellin me i'm stupid if i smoke wont make me quit.

As I said before, you made this thread asking about peoples addictions which is pretty personal, people have been honest in their answers so dont start telling them wot they are doing is wrong.

That has never washed with me.

It is really really easy.

You just stop.

Not wanting to give up is a seperate issue though.

The above only holds for people who actually want to stop.
