Why?

That only relates to if the plane wont take off.....

BTW....im in Yate

Well I think landing the plane on a moving conveyor belt would be quite hard?

You live in Yate? I'm sorry to hear that

You didn't go to KLB by any chance did you?

I spent a lot of time in Wotton in the early nineties though, and I'm not tempted to travel back in time its back in the stone age (almost)

I grant you it has a far lesser chav factor than over here though...its time to move methinks

Well said Jules.

The question is designed to cause argument over the different ways people interpret the 'facts'.

no because whichever way you look at the question the plane will take off.

if doesnt matter if the belt speeds up as the plane increases speed it will still take off. The belt could move at 10 times the speed of the plane and the plane would still move along it as the friction on the wheels is tiny

ok imagine this - conveyor travelling at 100m/s to the left, plane travelling at 100m/s to the right to compensate. KE=(1/2*M*V)^2. Plane weighs one ton (for example obviously) KE = 2500MJ. There is no way a conveyor belt could put that much force through the wheels of an aeroplane which freewheel (NOT DRIVEN BY A MOTOR LIKE A CAR!). One of the newtons laws of motions (been a year since i did degree level physics so excuse me for forgetting which number ) Every object will remain at rest unless a resultant force acts on it. The force from the engines far outweighs the force from friction due to the wheels, and as Force = mass x acceleration, the plane will accelerate and take off.
I havent read this though and its almost 2am, but hopefully it makes sense

Force on pa
