I can certainly feel the burn in my rear delts and traps the morning after doing deadlifts. Thats doing them with slightly bent legs.
Surelyon the initial lift you are putting strain on your shoulders (especially traps) ?
Just my 2p

Yeah, i've not got a spotter as i go on my own. Just prefer to do free weights where possible, rather have useful strength not just in one ROM.

your legs should take most of the brunt, i know as i am tall i have to have mine further apart than most, maybe your not bending and the knees enough maybe?

My knees are bent a fair bit. I think my legs probably dont hurt as much as I stretch my hamstrings regulary doing Martial arts.
I have my legs slightly wider than shoulder width. Im pretty tall too so thats where it feels most comfortable and stable.

The smith machine is brilliant for squats as its alot easier and controled and you can concerntrate on your form with out the worry of balance.
