IMO best thing you could do is boxing. I have been boxing for 8 years now, good sport to take up, and imo most useful in a street fight.

Went to the martial arts centre and explained myself to the bloke and said to him as well as learning self defence i need more strength to help me play football, and more confidence in general.
He suggested to me that i try Boxing. its more of a sport than a discipline (sp) and will help me in those areas. he says its quite relaxed too, its non contact practice, but if i want to spar i can do, and i will not have to turn up every week, although i will do to get good at it.
what are your thoughts on training using boxing?

I did kick boxing for about 3 years and loved it. Had to give it up a couple of years ago when I moved and didnt have much time, but looking to take it up again when I get some of my general fitness back!
I would say to do kick boxing rather than just boxing. You wont get as bored, plus if the guy teaching it is anything like mine then he will teach you stuff about defending yourself when in busy pubs, on the street, when they've weapons, when you've multiple opponents, etc.

i'd say size was a big factor anyway..

I have been looking into Wing Chun alot lately as their is a place just 5 mins from me in Manchester that is highly respected.
Its more of a close combat, part defensive but can also be attacking form. So its fairly good for street fighting/self defence. Its also not a high kicking type thing which is good as Ive lost all my flexibility since Ive stopped kick boxing

Wing Chun is very effective in street fighting or any kind of fighting for that matter.
I've used Wing Chun many times when problems have come about

I keep thinking of kick boxing but never get round to it, I think its the lack of flexibility putting me off.

Keep an old Boot lifter that doesn't work.
fairly small, strong, extendable and will hurt.

what a load of crap all that jit su kung fu rubbish is
some local lad who was pretty good apparently at it, won competitions etc, i saw my mate walk upto when he was trying to kung fu someones arse and my mate just lumped him,
he layed on the floor and was scared shitless,
best thing to do is just ignore it,them, walk away
let them hit you if they must a few times, let them have the benefit of the doubt and if not then just turn around and swing catch them by surprise,

Totally agree, only decent post in the whole thread. I go to a mixed martial arts class that uses elements of Kickboxing, Tae Kwon Doe and misc self defence techniques such as arm bars, choke holds etc etc. Kickboxing is bar far the most useful in a street brawl, normal boxing wont tech you to use your elbows and knee's, which are more damaging than any punch if used properly.
If you get good it renders size largely irrelevant.
Size Isnt everything

Put an average strong gym goer vs a decent kickboxer one on one (no weapons) and the kickboxer will win everytime. You also get strong doing martial arts too. I'm a serious gym go-er, but strength and size isnt everything.
Doing both is the key
Carl- I was about as flexible as a elephant when I started, only 3 months down the line and I can almost do the front splits, and can easily kick to head height. you have to start somewhere

I do it in Radstock mate, place called Whisty hall. Its a mixed martial arts class really, bit of everything but the base syllabus is Kick Boxing and Tae Kwon Doe.
The instructor is a 3rd dan black belt and former British champion . Really good class, good bunch of people and mixture of techniques, pad work, fitness and strength traning, traditional martial arts, sparring and self defence.
Sunday 7.30 and Thursday 8.00, first few lessons are free if you want to try it out, theres a few white belts like me so you wont feel out of your depth.
