My 12v does over 100 miles to £10, and I bet your bottom dollar it's more refined than a non standard Escort.

I have always said this about diesel cars. But on the other hand. If its purely mpg your after (not buying cost of car) the 1.9 tdi (golf for example) will due the same as a 1.4 knocing about (more on motorway) but has alot more power at the same time.

no debate, you drive your daily driver daily.

Make it something interesting, rather than something that stops accelerating at 3000rpm

why does it have to be so low powered? Whats wrong with a VAG PD130? When I picked my Ibiza up, coming home (surrey to notts, M25 and M1) traffic was fairly haevy but flowing and I got 54mpg without trying! thats lots of speeding up and slowing down too!

Its a difficult comparison to make because frequently, the different choice of fuel isn't the only difference in the car.

For example, the Freelander TD4 is a far better car than 1.8 petrol. It's got more torque in the right places and its generally considered to be far more reliable. As a result it's more expensive.

That's not solely based on the running costs. I wouldn't imagine there's much in it in terms of real world MPG and with the fuel being more expensive I would question whether you'll break even in the lifetime of the car.

15k Miles P.A - thats feck all really, you will obviously take a while to notice any cost saving

Try doing the wrong side of 35k P.A and you easily see that is is more cost effective to have a Diesel...

Diesels nowadays are marketed at distance drivers (Sales reps, fleets etc etc), the people who WILL see the benefits of the better economy figures achievable

why not buy a well priced corsa C 1.3 multijet, I have one and its not bad at all on a run i got 60mpg without particularly trying and that was 4 up.

After a year (not sure if thats how long you want it for) you most prob could get 95% of your money back

With the small engines you're looking at the diesel will probably be a better engine every time, there's that to consider as well as running costs.

I do about 15k miles per year now, if not more. Immediately I thought that for a daily driver I'd be better off with a diesel. So I have been looking at Fiat Grande Punto's with the 1.3 Multijet engine. However, for a decent one, you're talking £6.5k. Now, at a similar spec, you can get a 1.4 16v Grande Punto for £5.5k, which, is clearly a £1k saving.

Not being able to do simple arithmetic in my head, I jumped on Google and found the Which? Petrol v Diesel article with cost calculator.

Turns out, if I picked up a 1.4 16v Grande Punto with the 6 speed gear box, it would take, 2.6 years to start saving money (not taking into account servicing and car tax, which kind of cancel each other out). I couldn't believe the difference. Turns out the petrol would cost me £8 extra per week in fuel.

So, the moral of the story. Think twice before buying a diesel as a daily driver.

Also, the diesel will be worth more when selling its not as black and white as it takes x miles to make the money back.

As has been said though, none of this is new.

Most I got out of the 1.5TD when I had it was 450 miles to a tank and that was pushing it. I've never had more than 290 miles out of the sri, I'm not particularly amazed by it if I'm honest. I'd be getting myself a mk4 golf gt tdi If I had the money

I cant believe anyone actually bothers to work this out. You either want a diesel or you dont. I've never ever looked back over the cars I've had and worked out if I could of been better off by £10 over the time I had the car if I'd bought a different engine

I have not longer bought my first diesel car and I gotta say what a massive saving i'm making already.

I am getting over 450 miles out of a full tank which costs just £40 to fill and the car is only £35 a year to tax which is another huge saving.

Its a punchy wee thing as well with it bein a 1.6 turbo diesel.

Best buy i've bought for saving cash long term.
