Just to show you the differences my old XE did 135 flat out in 5th but the wifes old citroen VTS did the same in 4th with a gear to go 
Obviously thats just speedo readings but it gives you an idea.

does it really matter it does, all your doing is costing yourself alot of money, dont matter what each car does there all different.......
my motorbike does 87mph in 1st gear who cares its rediculous what people care about, my xe corsa was flat out pretty much at 135mph but why does it matter i did it once to see what it would do ive never done it again since....
hate it all people car about is top speed, was speeking to my friend the other day who owns a new clio 197 and i asked him what it was like his reply was oh well its not as quick as my brother type r his does 147mph and mine 137 or something i thought NO this was'nt my question......................
the time it actually takes ur clio and civic to reach its top speed is rediculous so why is this the only comparison, and im not even convinced they ever would reach the top speed...

Ratio's aren't everything although being able to do 60+ in 2nd is nice at it improves acceleration time slightly...
My brother's 1.6 focus does 65 in 2nd my type r only does about 58 his just takes a lot longer to get there

My 12v does 100 in 2nd... km/h I'm sure 1.6 sports don't do much more then 100mph in 4th so I think he's talking poo

Pretty sure my standard corsa GSi with an F15cr on it did about 80 in 3rd... so i d say hes full of shit.
My R1 did 102mph in first anyway, im pretty sure pontiac transams do 80 in first.

my golf will do a touch over 90 in 3rd then about 123 ish in 4th not had 5th to the top, backed off at 140 dont think it had that much more to give tbh
