Its true, I cant find the image but i took a screen shot of the bulletin we had sent to us last year.

I cant remember the exact words but it went something like this: If there is an exhaust fitted of a non standard type that is louder than the OE system by an unreasonable amount the vehicle shall not be deemed roadworthy.

Its a grey area, as one testers view of unreasonable is going to be different to another, so its ging to be down to testers discretion. I think if you took a 1.0 micra with a straight through bean can on it that was loud in an ott way the tester would more than likely fail it. But a hks system fitted to an evo would probably pass due to the type of vehicle.

i was told that an exhaust cannot be louder than standerd and that a car cannot be lowerd for mot i was told this when i went for my mot a month ago.

tbh i think its all bolloks and is a myth as mine passed and its lowerd with a aftermarket exhaust.

i highly dout he is talking shit, he wouldnt have said anything if he didnt belive this was true,

Do they have the equipment at the mot station to test the noise level? also what would they do to oldddd cars where maybe this data isn't available?

It is to the testers discretion, and it is true.

yeah its been like that for a few years tbh, it doesnt mean a car with a loud exhaust cant pass. there arent exactly any guidelines for it and its purely down to the testers discression.

True!!

As said in most of the posts that appear on here, a bulletin WAS sent to every MOT station and states that it is down to MOT testers discretion.

Has been for some time too.

Bonzer, mine was 91 last time it got tested

About 3 years back when I got it MOTd the tester told me it was borderline but he'd probably have passed it anyway cos I knew him quite well and he did all the family's work at the time so failing it over something like that would've been shooting himself in the foot anyway

as of january 1st 2010 any car that has bigger wheels than std will be disqualified from a vosa certificate. also any air filter that audibly makes the car louder will also mean a fail.

thats the latest internet rumours. taken from a civic forum.

I think you will find its very ture.
I have just been doing my course to become a MOT tester.

Taken from the VOSA Manual :-

Method of Inspection
assess subjectively the effectiveness of the silencer in reducing exhaust noise to a level considered to be average for the vehicle

Reason for rejection
a silencer in such a condition, or of such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a silencer in average condition

So if you read into that its down to how nice your tester is feeling.
