You'll struggle (imo) to find something decent ie. high spec and or sporty for £4.5k with low mileage. I've tried and failed after narrowing it down to a few possibilities lol.

put the car back to standard and use the thing. if it goes pop it goes pop but i cant see anything wrong with it, also sounds fine and not losing oil or water. Garage trying to get money i think.

a spark plug fell into the engine causing massive internal damage, damaged piston and the cyclinder head

I keep seeing sparkplug tips breaking off on car forums, makes me paranoid that mine might do the same, maybe get some new ones

So whats actually up with yours? Will probably be cheaper just to throw a new engine in rather than strip and repair the damage?

or source a recon engine from somewhere and pay to get it fitted,

but i've decided the best option is just to repair my engine with new pistons and head works out cheaper than the other two ways the car is 45k low mileage and actually runs fine before i had it checked over, just a really bad knocking noise on cold idle its an honest garage and thats what he can see is causing the problem

You can get used 12v engines for about £400. I'm sure the 1.2's won't be much more.

Seriously, my 12v is on 97k and going strong *touch wood*. I wouldn't bother reconditioning it.

£450, but I'm sure you could find one cheaper. If you know anyone handy enough its not that bad of a job to have a bash at yourself?

I know it biased but...

Bora 1.9TDi 130pd highline, practical, £250 re-map and you'll get performance and not as bland as skodas.

should get a good example for 4.5k and milage means fap all
