I make more than enough to take out finance on a new Corsa VXR etc, AND keep the Corsa for fannying around in, but I've no intentions of getting a new car. Far prefer older ones, which I know is strange to some, but not to me!

Is your decision maybe swayed by the fact you drive a peugeot & they have went right downhill from the 106/306 GTi's of yesterday now onto daft looking bubbles with silly doors and roofs?

I think its down to what you drive and what the new model is that counts here.

Generally most cars from the 90's that I can think of are shit compaired to the 00's version.

Example:

Golf - Mk3 was poor compaired to mk4/5/6
Porsche 911 - 996 was crap compaired to 997.
Ford fiesta - 90's models stank compaired to recent ones.

What replaced the 106? Is there anything to aspire to own?

Nothing as such, they stopped making 106's in 2003 then brought the 107 out a few years later. Although the 107 is nothing in comparison, it's a horrible little car is the 107. I don't have 1 good word to say about them.

106's ran until 2003 but iirc any decent model GTi's/Rally etc would have siezed producton before then?

I dunno what happened with them, 205's were stonking motors, 106 XS/i/GTi/Rally were all very good hatches.....sold well. Then after that nothing followed. Maybe if they had brought out something modern worth having then you'd want it!!

To be honest, no recent peugeot apeals to me. 205 GTI's, 306 GTI-6, 106 XSI/GTI were/are brilliant cars and apart from the 206 GTI nothing comes remotely close in terms of a hot hatch from them, everything these days is miles bigger and much heavier.

GTIs were still being made up to 2003

Peugeot have gone downhill with their performance models really, even the 206 gti 180 is poor imo.

Yeah, wasnt impresed by them at all. A mate had one and I though it was average in terms of a hot hatch, no fun what so ever.

In the real world where you have to commute and people hold you up, it has to be a new car. For something I drive everyday I can't ever see me selling my Golf for anything less refined, only something equally/more comfortable with more toys or power.

i loved my cavalier coupé but i didnt love repairing it all the time.

I think the question is far to broad to be answered with a clean cut yes/no
