I've been looking with just about exactly the same requirements, best car for the money is the Astra.
If you go BMW, Audi, VW, Skoda etc you either get a crap spec or older and more miles.

i agree with the astra comments, dad had one to test drive for 3 days and i loved it, quick enough, handled better than i thought and good on fuel.
however i have a facelift bmw e46 330ci(the 330d 204bhp model is nearly as quick) and i would have a e46 330d(204bhp model) if i was in your shoes, its just nicer in every way than the astra and more importantly a fair bit quicker

That shape looks really really dated since the new one came out.
And it's 10k for a car that's 5 years old with 70k miles.

very true, my 330ci that is 6 years old feels alot tighter and smooth compared to my dads 57 plate vectra diesel.
however i wouldnt get a 320d, bugger all fuel difference compared to the 330d and its slower, would make the 150 astra seem alot harder to ignore
