problem with the 306 is that is weighs a tone, if it wasnt as heavy it would fly!

problem is pug did down tune the lump but if you change a few things you will see the 180bhp and it will be reliable.. if it rattles its tits off it will keep going, if its quiet then i'd worry personaly as i used to work for a peugeot dealer and have had quite a few discusions with the master techs.

new set of cams, touch of head work, exhaust manifold & system, and my favoret adition a lightened flywheel... and it will be no slouch at all

you said a 180 took a v6 ...well it should i'd say any 2.0 16v in a small car should destroy any bigger v6 due to weight etc, the fact that it didn't destroy it, and if it is 175bhp like your argueing, its a pretty bad 175bhp car.

"A friend used to have 1 and it went very well, not far off the pace of my old Mk3 Astra Gsi v6 with app 190bhp but i dont think his was standard (think it was re-mapped) as it used to leave a local lads 180 with ease"

So you're saying the 180 failed to beat a 190bhp v6?

Yes but the 180 in question was deffo not standard. From a standing start, the V6 was only about a car length ahead.

so a non standard 180 couldn't beat a v6?
I shudder to think how crap it is standard then.

I fail to see what your getting at TBH??

The V6 was pushing around 190bhp,the Gti 180 around the same maybe a tad more(proven by handing a standard 180 its tawties),the V6's advantage was it has more torque and was in a Mk3 Astra Gsi.

Cunningham has also said his standard V6 Cavalier pulled on a standard 180 from a rolling start(again, the higher torque gave him the advantage).

I had the GTi (130 early version) and loved it.

Ok, so its performance won't set the world on fire, but it is a very capable car.

People rant on about reliability issues and build quality, i had mine for 10K plus miles and not many were driven steadily, it never failed me once. Like any car, look after it and service it well and it should serve you without too many problems.

Like most French cars, it had the odd squeak and rattle on the interior, but it didn't feel poorly built, infact it was very comfortable, and some nice toys come with the GTi too.

Heres some pics of my old one

The EW10J4 was in the 206 gti and Citroen C4.It was superceded by the EW10J4S which is the 180 version. Both of which are predecessors of the XU9J4 and XU9JZ engines from the 405 Mi16 and BX GTi.

I have owned both a 180 (from new) and a second hand 138 which I still have. Both are very capable cars and are packed with toys. My 138 pisses on a Corsa GSi for speed, handling, comfort and 'extras'.

I laugh at all the people here saying they are shit cars. Clearly you have never owned one! I have had seven Peugeots and their build quality is far superior than the two Vauxhalls I have owned. For a start they don't rust, they are fully galvanised.

Maybe a Corsa XE is faster in a straight line, but it can't go round bends!

I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.
