say a petrol car does 40mpg @ 1.02 a litre
and a diesel one does 50mpg @1.05 a litre
1 gal(UK) = 4.54609 L
10000/40 = 250 gallons = 1136.5225L = £1159.25(petrol@ 1.02/l)
10000/50 = 200 gallons = 909.218L = £954.68(diesel @ 1.05/l)
saving of £204.57.

Diesels you have the option of remapping for easy power and more torque and also a stronger engine. Smoother to drive with the torque, low rpm and no need to thrash it

Technically...I win as I used more decimal places, I also have a degree in Product Design with Motorsports Beng which makes me sound more professional and believable.

Diesels are worth while IMO if you keep them for years.

All depends on the engines you are comparing.
I had the choice of 2.0T petrol or 2.0T diesel, I'd be in the mid 20s to the gallon with the petrol, 30 at a push according to most of the owners on Audi-Sport. Compared to always 40 upwards, sometimes 50+ in my diesel and its actually not that far off the performance of the petrol! I'll admit probably not as fun as the petrol but if all I cared about was fun and not the rest of the stuff I'd of bought a hot hatch of some sort. The petrol A3 is actually more expensive to buy too (only by a small margin)

P.S. 12v Corsa's do 40mpg+ no matter how it's driven.
When comparing mpg, you have to compare like for like, exactly how MattyG is doing.
Compare a 535d BMW to 535i BMW. I know what will be better on mpg and save fuel on, let alone tax etc etc.
However yes, diesels are more to buy in the first place. . .but if you have the money, why not?!
All depends on what you need for a car. My daily commute is likely to be less than 20miles. If I bought a 1.3CDTi Corsa, it'd cost me £35/tax (if I bought the right year), 1 tank would last me nearly 1 month, and I wouldn't be going any slower than the luxury cruisers in the 50mph traffic queue.
