I really enjoyed mine
Had one in black with both cup packs. The thing i found though was that i drove it like a bit of a tit! always seemed to be ragging it around because..
A) It really strats to move after 5.5K
B) The handling is simply awesome! It begs to be driven hard.
One thing i'd say other than get one that hasn't been owned by a young lad is that the tyres are NOT cheap.Michelin Exalto 2's (£500+ for 4) which were not only made for the car itself but are still the best tyres to extract the potential out of it.I got some Conti Sport Contact 2's as a replacement and even though they were great there were not 100%.
And and don't bother getting a new exhaust system..my blueflame was so drony it gave me a constant headache on M/ways
Also i found the seating position ok as long as the wheel was all the way down and the seat leaned back..clutch is a tad stiff but you get used to it after a few days.Great MPG too...never got below 30 on mine.

All in all just drive one ans see how you like it
Personally i wouldn't bother with the 'Cup' car as i found my ABS/Climate/Auto Zenons etc made the car.

for long motorway cruises etc, jetta wins.
what do you want the car for, fun or comfort?
The reason I was looking at getting one is they looked like pretty decent bang for the buck. I'm fully aware the build quality isn't going to be amazing but they're not designed for that as far as I'm aware!
I can't say I really fancy a Skoda
Mate, drive one and see for yourself, people seem to expect a cheap hot hatch to be built amazingly. mine never rattled, never put a foot wrong. You get climate control, cruise control, auto headlights and wipers, half leather and alcantara seats, amazing handling, good looking. Now i'm sorry but the two people arguing the case think a Corsa B and a fabia VRS are quicker/better cars. If your anything like most young lads, you want a car that's nippy and fun to drive, and you won't go wrong with this.

Driven them a few times and 2 of my mates have 1 (172 and a 182)
Build quality is poor by todays standards, 10 years ago it would have been acceptable. They are crap round town, clutch is heavy and hasnt got much feel, no bottom end power and you need to drive like you stole it to get it to move at a fair pace, seating position isnt very good either. Engines are a bugger to work with and maintainance costs are pretty high considering its only a 2.0 16v n/a.
On the up side they handle well for a hot hatch, but then again there are plenty of other hot hatches out there for similar money which handle on par or better - the difference is the rivals are all better to live with daily and are built better too.
My money would go on a CTR, fiesta st or cooper s over a clio sport. Swaying toward the cooper S for the chuckability and build quality though.

Don't you think that's a contradiction in it's self though ? The CTR is far worse to "get going" than a Clio sport is and the fiesta ST is the same. And i can safely say that they don't handle better at all, i had one back to back for most of my Clio ownership. Oh and i now have a works cooper S and the only thing better handling wise is the LSD

I've driven a CTR and found it to be slow TBH.There meant to be equal to the 182 in terms of performance but i can tell you when i hit the supposed 'VTEC' zone all the engine did was make more noise and not go any quicker The seating position/gearshift were perfect though.
And a Fiesta ST??? Are you on crack? There shite
And your right about the maintenance...i forgot about the cambelt change costs Make sure both belts have been done.

It failed to excite me, dead before 4k RPM, rattles, cambelt is replaced at a ridiculous cost.

standard st is poor in comparison, would class it as the same league to be honest!
spend money on one and they do go well, we have many over 280bhp now

My 172 rattled and knocked and just didnt feel fast, it just wasnt there until it was actually moving, dont get me wrong was a fun little car but just horrible to live with day to day, seats where uncomfy, mine had the half leather, The clutch was proper heavy too and didnt have much feel to it, they've got a cheap feel to them etc, but at the end of the day they are cheap cars so cant complain. Saying that though... I would have another one but would have to be a low mile 182.
P.s Mine had 50k on the clock with a full service history

i test drove a 172 and was much happier driving home in my saxo.
the clio has a terribe driving position, seats peddles wheel and gearstick just dont feel llike theyre quite in the right position. and i'll echo what everyone else has said, it just doesnt feel like its as fast as it is, quite boring.
i bet it would be great around a track but it wouldnt see much track time with me so i didnt buy it

I want to buy my brother's off him! It's like hitting warp-speed compared to the 182... unfortunately I can't really afford to insure it until next year

Yeah, i will point out i haven't test driven one yet but it seems everyone wants a sodding deposit before they let you in a car these days!
I'd rather not have a CTR. I have a friend with one and not only is it the "fastest thing on the road" it just doesn't really do anything for me looks wise. Plus I'd rather not join their special little group!
I'll have a test drive then probably go back to the drawing board!

Rob B, is it you that has the mini now?
Just checked and it is.
I know you have a fancy JCW version but have you driven a fabia?
A standard fabia is faster than a cooper round a track and everybody is always on about how chuckable the mini's are, how do you explain that?
