In terms of looks Astra wins it hands down for me, I'm still not a fan of those front headlights on the civics
I drove my mates 1.6 V-tec (VTI 160bhp) yesterday and tbh it wasn't anything special
Yes VTEC does sound nuts and it is nice to have that pull at higher rpm, but the low down pull is shockingly bad

Maybe if you actually drove a type R like we're actually talking about....

how often do you drive round using that high rpm pull though, pulling out of a roundabout at 9k
much rather have an astras low down turbo power

A standard 1.6 VTi vs a Standard 1.6 Sport... The torque is pretty much equal

Civis, was watching some old Japanese touring cars.
Super 1600cc VTEC's revving to 10,000-11,000rpm on braking. Sounds bloody mental, almost like an IL4 bike being thrashed.
Made me want one, bad
Oh, Me, being a vauxhall bloke, i'd go for the Civic, but thats me and my driving style.

It was my first experience of driving a civic with a vtec engine and tbh I don't see what everyone is creaming on about? it's still the same principle with VTEC... just less power
oh and all this the civic will corner better... does it really matter unless you track it? I mean seriously does it really matter that your mate can go around a corner slightly quicker than you?

Most people don't know how to corner anyway.
I've very rarley come up against people who "play" who actually corner and brake properly

well now it appears that i can either have:
astra vxr,
civic type r
astra will cost more than the civic to get the specific one i want obviously

Out of them then no doubt the VXR. But it'll be a shit lot more than a Type r!

i went for an Astra GSi because mainly im a vauxhall man but also i think CTR's are quite chavvy. Everytime i see one its always ''Tec'ing'' it. Looks wise the astra wins easily. Ive never driven a type R but the astra isnt anything special anyway so wouldnt be hard to beat. I think the general conclusion is that the astra can be enjoyed both giving it some and also pootling about, whereas the civic just wants to grab you by the gonads all the time.
edit: If you get a CTR over a VXR you need shot

its a tough decision really, cos although i like the GSI, buying one in this climate and trying to sell it 2 years or however long i choose to keep it, will be fucking murder cos the value will drop like a stone.
i really want a VXR but up until yesterday having an interesting phone call with the insurance company, they admitted they'd insure me on one.

DC2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
tbh the comments regarding the Civic VTi not being fun are unfounded, there a very good capable car and yes they dont have a balance of bhp to torque BUT it has more torque than a corsa sport/gsi and more power. They are very good fun cars and are the best hot hatch from there era in my opinion

Its nothing to do with how fast it will go round a corner, its about as a driver you feel feedback through the wheel, the car not rolling over onto its door handles and not understeering into a ditch. Good handling is different to going round a corner fast, lots of people dont get this.

From reviews I have read the Civic Type R also suffers from lack of feel via the steering wheel along with the Astra GSi T
I've been looking at both of these cars myself just not sure what to get!

erm
I love mine. First I wasnt that impressed but once you know how to drive it as it were its mega fun
Will cruise well enough with around 150bhp on the other cam and its easy enough to change down a gear
Still do have a soft spot for the astra gsi's though but after back to back drives I prefered the civic
Drives supercharged Tec with torque

If you want a car to go and abuse all day long and tbh not give a fuck about = type R
if you want a money pit which requires love and attension = astra gsi
