Fuck a rebuild.

Just get a decent serviced lump. Change oil/filter/plugs/cambellt/water pump. Then chuck it in.

Warm it up and change the oil regularly and it should be nice and reliable.

End of the day it's still an old engine, can't expect it to be flawless. Could be spending out money on things that don't need done, just do the basics like timing belt as said and fix the rest if and when it breaks.

Spot on a rebuilt is not necessary I would rather spend the money on new sensors like crank shaft, air flow, fuel relay etc and it will be reliable. You must rember the latest engines are now like 18 years old so the odd failure of sensors etc is iminent.

People who say rebuilding one will make it more reliable are seriously deluded and have more money than sense! Unless its running seriously low compression there is no need.
