well depends what his budget is, the 8vs you can get for £150 16vs usually around £300.


If you shop at Harrods!!! My XE cost £150. My mates XE cost £150. My other mate got an entire 16v Astra GTE for £167!!! and then another for £100.

its mainly ebay I look at, thats probably my problem.


I've said this a lot recently....eBay just doesn't seem to be the place to get a bargain anymore. Forums and local knowledge FTW

I have a 1.6 16v in my track toy and for me personally, it's more than enough especially in a stripped corsa.
Plenty reliable, has plenty of speed round the bends but does struggle on some faster tracks ie brands, brilliant through the bends and more than a match for ctr and 182 but they done me on outright grunt on the straights.

A well set up 1.6 would be great fun, to learn and start of with; never going to fast to outbrake yourself and go straight on round a corner.

My veiw of course.

tbh there will be barely any cost diffrence between a 8v and a 16v d personally just go for a xe, if you go for a 8v then ur just want more power and end up spending more cash just to make the power upto xe speed

£ for power 2.0 8v c20seh - 130bhp


needs alot to the 1.6 to that power

and if you already have mounts/box, alot easier

ive gone for a 1.6 8v for a couple of reasons, easy to work on, carbs for the niose, cheap.
and ive not been on track so i dont wnat a massive amount of power, as im not skilled enough yet.

i didnt mean it quite that literaly

A 1.6 (about 100-110) bhp will be ok/good fun in a stripped out Corsa (will be a bit lame in a full weight car)

I'd tend to advise getting the Brakes & Suspension all sorted out before going on hunt for more and more power.

You see SO MANY cars on trackdays that are just not suited to the power they have. The fly down the straight then limp round the corners.

Decent brakes (pads at least (not GREENSTUFF), decent susp (not DaveA 1000mm lowering springs) and decent tyres are ALL much more usefull and IMPORTANT than power.

Once you have learned how to go round corners fast, where and when to brake and you have a good gereral level of competance and awareness on track - Go for more power

I think we showed this in TA last year.... running considerable better susp than (some) other skylines and bigger brakes... but with about 200hp less. No real differences in lap times

A big shiney exhaust and carbon bits look good in the pits - but i'd put them at the bottom of the list.

why noone said, x18xel with a few mods?
they arnt as heavy as a xe they have more power than a 16xe,

reliable as they are newer, and pritty cheap tbh
