Nope, you can have an insured car sat on your drive, just covering fire and theft

if your cars taxed and insured u can drive it to an mot
like if ur mot runs out few months before your tax then ur ok.

but if u want to risk losing the car if u get pulled over becouse of no tax then its up to u

Driving an untaxed vehicle to an MOT test
You can drive your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged test at an MOT test station provided you have adequate insurance cover in place for the use of that vehicle.

This also applies to vehicles being driven to and from a prearranged test at a Vehicle Inspection Check (VIC) test station, an approved weight testing station and reduced pollution test.

Tis the law, taken from http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_069671

But no mention of distance

If you do risk it and get caught, then your still going to need a trailer if the coppers lift your car.
So save the risk and get it trailered in the 1st place.

Look, I have heard from the DVLA's mouth when I telephoned about my fathers Capri:

You are not allowed to drive an untaxed or unMOT'd vechile at all EXCEPT:

- To drive to or from a pre-booked MOT test.

- To drive to or from repairs to a car to pass an MOT test.

From the horses mouth.

So, Dad's capri was untaxed, uninsured and unMOT'd.

So we insured it first, then drove it LEGALLY to the MOT station, got an MOT, drove it back HOME, took another car out to get road tax using the insurance certificate and MOT certificate, put the tax disc in the Capri and then drove it legally.

Stop handing me this bull about illegal to drive with no MOT or Tax at all, there is the above.

Tbh I;m gunna call a family friend about getting it home on a trailer I think, ANPR is a worry these days.

Dave, if it has no tax you cant drive it on the road despite it being insured.

Can you not put a deposit on the car insure it, apply for the tax online using the V5C number on the green slip. Once you receive the tax go up collect it and drive it stright to the mot stattion as desired. If you get your skates on this should take a few days at most.

What are you buying by the way?

You cannot tax a car without an MOT fad? I jus thought what about going up to take a look at it, taking it with the owner to an MOT station, paying for an MOT. If it passes then buying it and taxing it on the way home - IE nearest post office.

Personally, id say its a bit far... but.. as you have heard from the dvla that it is legal to do so then there should be no problems, possibly get something off them in writting to prove it if you get an arsey copper. other than that ring the old plod and ask them what they think/ ring the dvla again and see if there is a distance limit on it.
