maybe someone just decided to smash your rear window?
or is that too logical for you?
from inside?
opened the door, climbed in, smashed the window, then climbed out and walked off

it's the heater elements in the rear window anyway.
if it's very cold and you stick the heater for the rear window on, theres a chance the glass will expand i believe causing cracks which eventually leads to shattering.
has happened to a few fords.

Yeah just because you hit a glass, it doesnt mean the shards would be on the inside. The glass is slightly flexible (obv not as much as plastic) but it probably shattered on the rebound causing the glass to fall outwards.
I only know this because a car on my estate had their back window smashed with a hammer, and there was literally 2 or 3 shards inside... the rest under the bonnet.

A guy at work has a Ford Escort and was driving along 1 day and the back window blew out.Weirdly it never smashed when it hit the road.He just picked it up and put it back in till he got home.
But he did know it was loose in the 1st place.
