Still illegal tbh, law states they must be spaced like this, 2 groups with x amount of space between the letters in each group and y amount of space between the 2 groups.
Well that's unless you have some dodgy laws in Scotland

You can spot most unmarked cop cars easily round here, you an see the lights behind the grills of most of them when they are behind you.
Our police for have got a black impreza STI and a evo 9 with all carbon bits.

Cars round here (Lincoln) you can tell a mile off in the day, its a big M5 estate, in PURPLE
Theres also a few Skodas and what not, but they havent done a particularly good job of disguising the lights hidden behind the front grill. And also, 2 hard faced blokes riding around together in the day in a brand new car? Come off it

Every single OU registered Vectra is an unmarked car here.
They also (stupidly) have bought the one and only green vectra in the whole of the Thames Valley Area

Why couldn't the police have illegal numberplates? Hardly going to arrest themselves.
I remember seeing a Z4 M Coupe on the M6 with a Scooby right up its arse, looked like they were having a bit of fun, looked 'harmless'. A few more minutes down the road, the Scooby had flashing lights in the headrest on the hard shoulder. Ooopsie.

And I think the point with the lights in the grill visible is 1) so you can see them when they flash 2) most people probably get caught when they overtake at speed i.e. not seeing the lights until it's too late.

He was just after a bit of fun id say.If he wanted to pull you,he wouldve without question.
If they were to stop you for it,you could probably talk your way out of it saying he was harrasing you and you got a little nervous and sped up a little.
And no police cars have a bigger space between digits. Its probably certain letters that make it look like theyr is a bigger gap.

I'm not disputing the fact that you have neither. But it would have been for another reason, or a technicality. Not because it was an unmarked car. It sounds like you've misunderstood the person that told you that.

No its not. Sometimes you can see the lights behind the grill just because of big the spacing is in the grill, also if they weren't behind the grill where else could they have them so people in front could see when they are on? on the roof?

The point I'm making is you can't hide them too much, otherwise you wouldn't be able to see them flashing, or they wouldn't be very clear therefore not achieving their desired affect of gaining peoples attention.
Light travels in a straight line, so if there is something in the way to 'hide' the light units, you aren't really going to see them flashing. . .
