I don't see why not, it's off the road same as it would be on a driveway, if not safer because it won't be in view.
It's quite a long way to travel on a scooter, but if it's only minor roads it's not too bad. And aslong as you don't mind getting wet etc then it's a good way to save money.

i used to have an honda nsr125 cheap everything and awesome on fuel. sold it to buy the corsa though. got to scooters though and good for going down the shop but riding to the city (30 mins away) is boring because they are so slow and people dont really care if they nearly destroy you or anything in busy traffic. think the best 125's to get are the honda nsr or cbr 125 or an aprilia rs125 as there all quite nippy (good acceleration, top speed around 70 mph when derestricted) loud and big enough for people to notice you and get out the way

I wouldn't get an rs125 if you are traveling far away from home, tend to blow up quite alot
Yeah they can do 100mph for about 2 minutes and them boom.
4 stroke runner will do about 70mph, 80mph on speedo, quite expensive if you buy a new one and alot of people like to nick them, even if its just because you have nice forks or panels.
cg125 will be the most reliable.
I dont know how good the cbr125 is, seen a few and some sounds pretty cool.
My mate uses a c90 to get to work, about £100 to insure for the year.

Absolute myth and utter rubbish. For a year me and my friends all have Aprilias of some sort, RS/RX/SR 50's & 125's and not one of them blew up or had any troubles with and being 16/17 they used to get abused, the RS125's were running power valves & Arrow exhausts and were brilliant.
I can't believe after all these years the Aprilia unreliablity problem still comes out.

No idea, I never had one. But they were the same speed and really opened them up, one was the older shape RS125 in black and the other was the newer shape with the bumble bee rear end.
I remember going to Camberley with them to get them fitted, was just a wedge shape that went into the side of the cylinder.

I've had a 125cc scooter and done 27 miles each way.
It won't last long, take the advise!!!!!!!!!!
Drivebelts need replacing every 3000 miles or less. OK if you've got an airgun, and its fiddly but can be done at home. 125cc screaming at 9000rpm for 20+ miles each direction......... Would you drive your corsa at 6500rpm everywhere?
Then I got a Gilera Runner VXR 200. Good little bike to start with. Then after about 2-3 months, it started to play up. Again, sitting at 85mph everyday didn't help, but same old service intervals. 3k belt change, rollers etc.
RS125, again, big no no. OK if your 17 and want a nippy bike to have fun with, but every single day? Stay clear. Needs expensive oil (don't forget 2 strokes use as much oil as they do fuel nearly!!!), rebuilds around 10k plus (most do, some don't).
For a 125cc, boring ride, but the NSR is reliable. Will do 75mph, 4 stroke, very very cheap to run, but a little boring and bland.
What about the new Yamaha 125? Again, middle ground, not quite as good as an RS125 for fun, but far superiour to the CBR. Will do about 90mph.
Honestly, you want cheap reliable. Then you NEED these!!!
4 stoke
low cc
reliable (check on tinternet)
cheap insurance
PS, the 2 stoke 125 Runners were as quick as my 200 to about 50-60mph, when the 200 had better top end.
I think the newer 4 stroke 125/200cc range has a much better belt change milage period.
Honda C90 ftw!!!
What about getting a restricted proper bike? 50mpg (oh, you will get about 70mpg on the 125), proper bike, proper engine, proper brakes etc....

Only the brand new MotoGP type range has cured SOME of the issues.
But its a 2 stroke, its not just aprilia. Any 2 stroke needs regular rebuilds. Ask anyone who actually understands 2 strokes, and they will agree.
Your looking at 10k plus of hard abuse before the wear and tear signs show. Use the best oil and you'll look at another 5-10k.
Use cheap crappy oil, like MOST 16/17yo will, cos its cheap innit, and it'll go bang very quickly.
But look after them, and they do last, but they WILL need a rebuild. Unlike a 4 stroke that will go on and on and on.
My old 125cc ped made it to nearly 40k, but that bike was seriously seriously needing an engine freshen up (again, best silkolene oil).

4 up
How about a 4 stroke, VX125? Still a ped but will be more reliable. I was looking at them when I was getting a local job.

Biggest problem with a ped, is that you get about as much respect on the road as a whoare at a church wifes convention.
The abuse I got as a scooter rider was insane (as in no-ne gives you room, your classed as a 16yo chav by EVERYONE).
Ironically, when i got to bigger bikes, it all stopped yet my riding remained the same.

I agree. I was riding mine without L Plates, and got pulled because Old Bill thought I was riding illegally, it's just a brush that comes with them.
My VFR400 was off the road, so I insured my ped and rode it around for a couple of weeks, it was like a different experience.

My aprilia rs125 was gine and had it for 3 years and 20k miles and it didn't need a thing. Although i would go for a yamaha r125 for comuting or a 4 stroke 125 ped will be fine.

*Lame head on*
Another bit of advise for you to ponder on.
When I first started riding for peds, I actually wanted a Benelli (oh how things come full circle) 491
My dad (bikes is his passion) really advised me against it. Sure bombing round on a little peds fun, but if you want something purley for work (i.e more money to spend on the car ), then what about a proper 125cc commuter scooter.
I didn't like the idea at all. Dad spotted a purple Piaggio Hexagon for £1000. I wasn't keen, at all!!! It was far to geeky and lame for what i wanted, i needed a cool scooter for work. He pushed me further, I bought the Piaggio, same as this...

Laaaaameeeeee
BUT, I rode it. Feet up, lift the rear seat up for the backrest, twist and go. Big screen to deflect the rain and wind (HUGE difference for commuting), big boot to put things (could fit a whole bash hat in there, and tools etc..).
Best decision ever. I got the 200cc VXR and although it was far more fun, I got covered in the rain, dirt, grit, much worse in the winter.
So if its JUST for going to work, consider the lame options, there are loads of the commuter 125's about now, and they are worth considering for the comfort and ease of everyday riding.
Just to think about too
Oh the 200cc one. Needed new calipers n allsorts... Brake pads are so small and cute
