no offence but to get people in the door and get them to stay you have to compete with other forums to get the client base to swap to your forum. Your forum in my eyes is in the direct firing line of MIGweb and alike

It's not that it's stupid, it's that it's a saturated market and having 0 members before posting it on here isn't a good start.

You've not bothered getting a proper domain or hosting and you say the premium is to pay for this, you could have it all for 2 years for under £30 and look a bit more professional if you were serious about it.

I like the idea of having responsibility and running a site is very rewarding, but starting a site is difficult and expensive and you won't have success if you need to wait until pay day until you buy proper hosting - which you can't do because the names are taken?

I threw four figures at a new venture called Weekend Racer and we have now some flags, marketing materials and a good launch event but without massive effort and more money it still isn't busy. It'll need more of the same. I also am not relying on poaching members from other forums in its growth. It needs to be a good project in its own right which will naturally attract people and it needs to be marketed to make them want to do so. And you've been asked what features your all-Vauxhall site will have over VXON or MIG and failed to give us anything - that isn't being competitive.

If you truly want to be responsible for something, contact a regional organiser about helping out or getting a trip out somewhere organised. Or read my thoughts in previous threads of mine about growth of this site and the contributions from members which I need. Or u2u me about moderation. Or contact anyone out there with a big web site about the same.

It's very pleasing to see keen people wanting to do stuff but my advice would be that you channel the energy in the correct ways.

Because that is neither the main reason to want to do it, nor a particularly sound business proposition.

i agree money has to be put back in but surely its not worth the effort if you gain nothing?

even if its only a small amount

Depends if it takes as much effort to get the money as it would have earning it delivering papers.

When I first started my website I had basically the same responses on this thread, I'll admit it's still a small site but I can't devote enough time and money into it as I'd like to for the moment as I've got my own business to run which takes priority over everything else.

Still though, I get new members sign up every day and I'd say about 2/3 of the people that sign up find the site from Google, and the rest either from Total Vauxhall magazine or from word of mouth.

Hmmm maybe this thread has made me realise that I should put more effort into it

But anyways, going back to topic, if you want to be taken seriously get a proper domain name and hosting sorted out, optimise it for search engines and advertise the site only (and I don't mean going on someone else's forums and posting about your site, not unless there is a seperate 'web links' type section anyway).

HTH.
