I'd go for the R32 purely on looks. Absolutely love them.
Haven't driven either though, so cant comment on that side of things.

Trying telling that to R32 owners who paid over 26k for theirs and now can't shift them.

It doesn't handle any better yet boasts 4WD, it weighs ten tonnes, fall to pieces as well as a shitty Vauxhall and has an inflated price tag.

If you read it you'll see I said shouldn't lose as much, I didn't say they'd not lose anything.
Since he's buying second hand i'd put money on the golf holding its value better.
The astra will be worth 5k in a couple of years, people always pay mega £££££ for golfs.

Also an Edition 30 gti is a much better choice than the R32..
To all those who say the r32's wont loose money, they probably wont now, but in the last 6 months they have lopped around £10000 off the price of some at my old work.. new price £26k - 6 months on on the forecourt at £16k.. now thats depreciation..

If only you were buying today ... best of both worlds http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/747045.htm
I'd have to go for the R32 mainly based on the noise and it being a tiny bit more grown up.

Horses for courses really, especially when 25% discount was readily available on an outgoing product recently - i.e mk5 golf R32
To add - I sourced and ordered a new 'Burg at launch for someone for sub £16k iirc.

Do you base this simply on looks?
Because if you drove one back to back I know which one most of you would buy. Remove the badges and walla, the Vaux wins.

I'd buy the one that does a lap of Luton the quickest.
