2 1/2 years as an apprentice mechanic, I had an idea about some things before that but most of it I learned in that time. Now if I don't know I'll have a look and find out.

Self taught just from reading and tinkering basically, me and a mate did an engine change at 15 on his fiesta .
Now I'm just a geek and obsessed with cars.

All self taught myself and went from there.
only just getting around to getting my NVQ level 3 so i can get an MOT bay fitted.
My lads 9 years old and i am passing all my skills onto him, he has already built an engine (with my pointing out things) and he can MIG weld better than some of my mates
everyone has to start somewhere......
To give people motivation to start and where it could take u, in 2000 i couldent even change a set of brake pads
8-9years on i am building a 900+bhp twin engine corsa
Shows if you put your mind to something......

I'm jealous of your son Beardy, I never even thought about how cars worked until I was at least 16 never mind building an engine at 9

Never known my dad so always struggled in that department. Even simple things like borrowing tools is an issue.

Not that I know much, but all my limited knowledge has come from here, Top Gear, and what I know about BMW's, BMW Car Mag.

Dont u think that skills are not passed nto next generations now?
most of our dads can work on cars, and done it loads of times, always have an advice how to do one or another?
also new cars are more complicated than basic corsa.. lots of electronics, etc. in older days i u go to garage guys would tell u whats wrong by the sounds of engine, now they take a laptop
ithink because of the way cars are built now, number of poeple that have skills to repair cars will be very small

I learnt from my dad. I bought a mini at the age of about 12, and stripped and rebuilt most of it with him. Only to then sell it on before i was 15 lol.
Then i got an apprenticship at volvo trucks. studied for 3 years on block release at college for a btec in HGV repair and an NVQ level 3 in HGV repair.
Then i studied 10 modules within volvo to gain my master technician status. All by the age of 21 lol.

Mainly from my Dad, as he has his own small recovery/salvage company. So i'd often help him with things, or just mess about with cars before they get scrapped.
Quite a bit is self taught though, and when money allows im hoping to build some to further my knowledge
