The 2.5 Z4 is pretty slow. I nearly bought a 3.0 Z4 recently but decided to hold off until i'm more confident about my job security.
Will you get insured on the VX at 19?

i had this dilemma when i bought my vx220 na. went for the vx over a z4 because its a drivers car there is lots of niggles that the bmw doesn't have like taking ages to warm up in the winter, noisey hard to get in and out the car in parking spaces but these are just niggles not problems, if you can get past these niggles then you will find the vx a nuch better car

oh yeah forgot you were 19, get the vx220 if you aren't happy with it can always sell it, make sure you get a good one though, alot of them have light front enders and people bodge them up so take your time.

i was looking into the vx220 aswell recently. just got a quote of nearly 1500 quid on one though, which would be 300 more than the focus.
