There are new aerodynamics rules in place, plus the slicks. Biggest rule changes in F1 for something like 30 years, but I'm fucked if I can remember what they all are

Looks have to be a part of it though, they won't attract fans with ugly cars.

An F1 car is pretty much the product of finite element analysis and wind tunnel testing. A lot of the shapes produced from that are quite elegant anyway because they are natural organic shapes...

It doesn't really matter if the car is ugly or not (which it looks like it is). It wont stop me from supporting Hamilton.

You forget Computational Flow/Fluid Dynamics will come before the wind tunnel testing - oh those were the days
I nearly went to do a masters of Aerodynamics at Southampton Uni; I'm so, so glad I didn't

the smallness of the rear one can be made small so you can direct airflow via bodywork to it, but i imagine it is just a stupid rule.

It's down to the regulations, not that that shape is better.
but that shape is the result of the experts matching the regulations....
have to agree it looks odd, but style isnt important for an F1 car (proven by the AirFix style min wings seen on the side pods in the past) it is results that count,

I like it. The rear wing looks more retro to me, like a proper F1 car

JPS ftw

Why has the BMW got grooved tyres on. Surely if they are testing the car it would be better to have the slicks on?

Couldn't anyway, it was banned.
As with anything technologically advanced that gives a team the leading edge over everyone else.
I mean, a race team, developing a new technology to aid the world of motoring, banned becuase its new and gives an advantage.
Shocking eh........ (just stating as its so ironic in F1).
