I think the fact that you yourself knows nothing about it would be the answer to that question.. Why bother?

If you had a rough idea of what parts you will need then fair enough but you are kind of going into it blind.. There are PLEANTY of little strokers around for sale for peanuts! Better off buying something that needs a little work i.e. a set of reeds and a tune up than some un-identified flying crapject.

You'll need to check the barrel face is healthy, is the crank ok?, the reads will need replacing, has the carb been left dry? is the float ok? etc. etc. Its not quite as simple as "throwing in a new piston".

because there is no telling you. for starters you dont know what is there and what isnt. as daves said the crank could be gone. iv bought enough broken motorbikes in my time to fix up to know not to do it again. it just isnt worth it!!!!

get abit of cash and you can buy one that has all the bits there and is running and in alot better condition, not in a box!!!

Dont even bother fixing it, will be more hassle than its worth. Like has already been said a bike of that age is probably going to have a few other problems. Fitting a piston is a piece of piss, but other jobs like a new crank and bottom end bearings is a pain as the casing has to be split more than once, and good tools are essential.

Might seem like a bargain at £100 but you will end up spending a lot more than that. A good piston is around the £50-60 mark, gasket sets is around £20 for genuines, a new small end bearing will be needed, might need the barrel honing if its scored, and also the head may be damaged.

Also while the engines out like that you would also want to replace any seals and bearings on the actual bike and frame, which is a lot of money to spend but you would be silly not to do all the jobs while the engines out, but it will cost you big bucks in doing so. So in summary buy a decent bike

Youd need some balls to ride one. Funnily enough a company in america take the 500cc 2 stroke honda motor and are putting them in the 4th gen honda aluminum frames, will try and find a link

http://www.servicehonda.com/cr500af05.html

A bike becomes a legend by dominating the competition in every motocross and off road situation. The Service Honda 500AF adds another chapter to the legend that is the Service Honda 500AF.

The 500AF utilizes a 4th generation chassis, refined suspension and an aggressive look. The 500AF combines the fierce power of the CR500 engine and the advanced features of the latest chassis resulting in the most powerful and versatile off road motorcycle today.

The 500AF’s unique combination of unequaled power, nimble handling, stability and durability makes it ideally suited to a wide variety of riding conditions. Roosting your buddies in the dunes, blasting through the desert, cutting through challenging trails or punishing berms at the local motocross track, the 500AF performs flawlessly in all conditions.

Many areas require the use of spark arrestor silencers that are noise emission certified. These silencers are available as an option. Unique to the motorcycle world, the easy to control power of the 500AF is undiminished by these regulatory requirements.

The 500AF is not only functionally superior, it is also downright stunning with slim bodywork accenting the massive cylinder. Throw in anodized black rims and rear sprocket and the 500AF is not only pretty looking, it is pretty mean looking.

The 500AF is available with numerous options including cylinder porting, suspension and many others. We can custom build the bike to fit your specific needs, all with the quality you expect from Service Honda. The price of this very special motorcycle is only $8999.
