But diesel, cheap tax, MPG and performance shouldn't really go hand in hand!
No matter what anyone says diesel will never be a sporty car, with the shitty low rev limits and tractor noises

It's quite funny how angry he gets at it
It's quite funny how you know your neighbours mpg

nail on head. Diesels are boring to drive hard!

It's all opinion tbh, I had loads of fun driving my diesel.
Although my saab is an old mans car it's a turbo petrol engine and doesn't have many more revs than a diesel.
I'll use the clio again as a perfect example, rev'd up to whatever, didn't have anything at all under 4k, same power band as a diesel.
You won't get amazing mpg if you drive it hard but it can be just as fun as a petrol.
Edit to say that obviously nobody's told Audi that you can't have a sporty diesel, that R8 must be really boring to drive

Have you actually been in a well tuned diesel? one which can rev and makes a proper 6 cylinder howl, goes like stink and handles amazingly even though it's an estate?

How old is the 530d though, and does he drive it like a typical salesman i.e. 90mph everywhere? Also, imagine the MPG if he was in a petrol equivalent. I'll always say it and I'll say it again, you have to compare the diesel against a petrol of the same calibre. No good comparing a 530d to a 1.5DCi Clio or something.
The new BMW engines (including the 3.0d) have been developed to use 0w30 oil or something, so is super super efficient in every way. Also remember the 3 Series will be lighter than the 5.
What I don't agree with, is that with the Stop-Start technology (which happens to work really well) it'll have £120 tax. But you can turn it off

All this torque about diesel.....
I couldnt help myself!
Diesels are brilliant on the motorway even at high speeds.
But once you drive them around town they are no different than a petrol engine!
You cant drive them on boost if you want mpg.
And i think joe where arguing the fact that you arnt going to do 60 mph in 6.1 seconds whilst at the same time do 50 mpg that they boost.
I think he is saying that if you do want 60 in 6 secs, you arnt going to be eocnomical so there is no point in having one.
But the arguement would be you well you can do either/or

I still think my Fabi Vrs is fecking brilliant fun. Drive it normally and get 52mpg for the pleasure. Drive it like i stole it and it goes some and still returns 35mpg!!
When i got it it was between the VRS or clio 182 cup and just something about the cup didnt feel as good. Madness in the eyes of some of you im sure but the fabia suits my lazy style of driving because i dont have to rev it to make it go somewhere quick!

Very hard to drive a TD off boost. Full boost comes in at very low rpm. They only drink hard when Flat out.

sorry im not up with the big boys still driving around in a Corsa b TD, its quite highly modified and im pretty sure its just as quick as a 1.6 sport if not quicker.
I use it mostly round town and for deliveries and i get atleast 35mpg, comes on boost very quickly and with a modded exhaust id be very suprised if you could tell it was a diesel from the outside

Obviously its miles away from your 335d, but my 2.0DTi doesnt come on boost until 2500RPM, with usable revs up to about 4000RPM (seen an RR printout and it nosedives anything after) so mine isnt too difficult to drive off boost, for example I can sit at 70mph and be touching around 2300-2400RPM, so doesnt even use the turbowhen cruising.

2.5k?
I'm sure if you booted it at 1800 RPM the turbo would whistle up.
Turbo doesnt come in at a certain RPM, it to do with amount of throttle.

Hmm maybe, doesnt seem to come in lower than 2300RPM, you can definetly tell cos the whole car jumps forward and the loud pedal really does make it loud

I don't think it's too bad side and rear on. Front is a bit strange.
Hopefully Alpina will do something with it like they did the 320d
