Selective price mechanism
This is why oil barons can afford to buy football clubs with their pocket change.

But do Diesel cars not usually cost more to buy than their petrol counterparts? and the fuel is more expensive too.

Yeah, normally it does depend totally on the mileage you do. If you do 10 miles a day to work and back, you would undoubtedly be better off with a petrol equivalent.

My mums diseasel only does 30mpg which means it isn't cheaper on fuel either plus it takes about £85 to fill up.

Must be a high powered one and she must give it death everywhere. Do the same in the petrol equivalent and you'd get less MPG than 30.
The general public think just because it's a diesel car, it must get fantastic MPG - they do, but it's relative to the petrol variant really.

A round trip to my work is literally 10 miles

True mate, a bloke came in to work going on about how he has a diesel Navara and it gets about 30mpg, then one of the guys from work goes "yeah well my diesel gets about 50" and the Navara bloke started going on about how because it's a big engine etc.

Exactly. Compare the diesel Navara to a V6 one or something, and it'd be completely different.
