Should watch out buying these cheap old ones tbh. If they go pop, it'll cost more to rebuild than you paid for the thing.

think a 172 is going to be the best bang for your buck on that budget. only been in a 172 cup but that was a very fast hatch with good grip/handling but i felt the interior was abit of a let down, it wasnt bad just wasnt very sporty, at all infact.
might be tempted by an bmw e36 328 is or nissan 200sx s14 but both are going to be 10 years old now and more to maintain than a 172
how about a volvo t5? or a saab like in john avatar?(unless its a viggen)

E36 3.0 M3.
286bhp in standard form and a real cut above the rest of the road fodder you see most days.

I think general running costs of an M3 or a car of similar status will be too much for me, I'm not mechanically minded at all so paying a garage to work on it would be costly I bet haha
Clio does seem best VFM... been in an Ibiza Cupra and driven it.. remapped, boost tails off after 4k like you wouldn't believe, engine note has no character.
Clio 172 cup mate of mine had one, never drove it but was very powerful/torquey feeling all the time, sounded brill, went brill (quicker than ibiza) but slightly pants looking interior. Not too rattly though! But I'd want a full fat 172

I doubt you will get much more of a Performance car than an M3 for £3,000 tbh.

A lot of people don't want a shoddy high mileage m3 though, i'd have a lot before an N reg 112k miles m3 for that price.

some 1.8's have rear disks (mine does), but i believe all 2.0 and 2.2 have rear disks, but 1.4's and 1.6's do not. i'm only telling you this cus it was a must have for me especially when you have alloys, drums just look gay.

Totally depends on the history etc.If it had FSH and was a minter at a bargain price id snap it up.But TBH they dont come along all that often.
Good condition 328i sports go for more than £3k.
