You'd probably have to import one, or check a classic american car magazine.

That one looks worth more than 8k, but you get the idea.

In the current climate, Ford Fiesta Zetec S TDCi. Used, 1-2 year old, 2-1 years warranty.

I think you need to consider downgrading from a Corsa, think its a bit 'flash' for you

Aye?

Cars are meant to be enjoyed, not all about mpg and warranty

tbh, any car coming from an 8 year old 12v Corsa B on standard suspension will be an enjoyment

Depends if you need a car which won't cost you a lot to run

Fair point, but having a decent MPG, and not having to worry about repair costs that are covered by warranty means for alot of people they get to enjoy their car more. Obviously depends on the persons budget though!

The main things to consider are what you can afford to put extra every month in terms of running costs, Insurance, Fuel etc. As you stated - £8k can but you anything from a peanuts-to-run brand new supermini to the opposite end of the scale being in the region of a EVO 6/TVR cebera! It's more down to what you want to spend every month on running it, and how easily you can find funds should it break!

I'd almost say that running costs would bother you then - surely you don't want to be paying say a £2k a year in insurance and tax then not using it?

If you can afford the insurance a VX220 would be ideal as the engines are pretty sturdy, servicing is cheap i'd imagine (same as servicing a 2.2 astra/vectra?) and if you got an early one (which it's be for around 8k anyway) it's be pre 2001 tax bracket . Failing that, hot hatches are a fairly happy medium bewteen performance, insurance, reliability and economy.

I agree about the MPG, I can't see a car that does 40+ being a fun car in any way, fuel is there to be used!

Also sick of all this MPG shite, its now more important than fecking 0-60 and top speed down the pub!

Warranty on the other hand is a major plus, I would have had to pay out £1500 on repairs within the first two weeks if I had bought my car without one leaving me skint!

I reckon MPG is important though for some even if you do enjoy cars.

What if you trip to work/college/GFs involves a busy dual carriage way, some residential areas and a single track NSL road where you can never overtake at rush hour.

I fast car would be great fun on the odd weekends when you get to blatt around, but sitting it traffic knowing pounds and pounds of petrol is disappearing is not my idea of 'fun'.

It would depend if I had to be sensible with what I bought.

If I had to be sensible, maybe a Fabia VRS with lots of change left over.

Or

Something Jap. You can get some nice cars imported nowadays for under 7k.

Think the ideal solution is 2 cars, one for the daily slog to work and one for fun

I should really buy something that does good mpg as I do alot of miles, problem is that cars is my hobby and sadly a diesel that does 40+ mpg doesn't push my buttons (although i'd love one for daily driving)

Im constantly wresting with this decision

You'd need to do some serious miles before getting a second car becomes feasible. Obviously depending how bad on fuel your "fun" car was dictates the savings to be made, but between My astra and a car that'd do 50mpg - by the time i'd taxed & tested it, splitting the mileage 50/50 doing 2k a month would only save me about £50 a month tops - that's before I've even bought the car or MOTd it either! Also don't forget to knock off roughly 5%-10% of any diesel MPG figures as you pay it extra when you fill up at the pumps!

Agreed!!...

an older car would be a better bet, a GSi cav or a Saph Cossie...you'd be getting a better build and more respected car.

new cars arent build to last at all...hell i wonder how some '55' plate vehicles are still goin sometimes!
