cr all the way, the build quality is superb, everyone i know would love a crf450, meant to be top of there class
Thats about all the CR has is build quality and handling, but the motor on modern day 2 stroke hondas are quite poor. Having owned a 2005 CR 125R (identical to 06,07) the motor is very weak in terms of power compared to the others in the class, same in the 250 class.
I would go for a yamaha personally, best engines, superb handling and suspension, can you stretch your budget? have you ridden before? definately worth upping the budget as you will get a much better bike.
I currently have an 06 YZ 125 and its an awesome bike, but for around £1500 you can pick up an 05 Yamaha YZ 125, as from 05 all YZs had alloy frame, dont discount a 125 when looking for a bike, as fast as a 250 but lacks the torque of the bigger engine, so needs to be worked a lot harder.
Only problem with th 06/06 yams were the bearings on the swing arms. But seeing as it's a few years on now i should think most of the bikes have had them replaced.
Dont listen to the rumours also, KTM's dont fall apart.
Yep I agree about swing arm bearings, seem to be constantly wearing on mine, but other than that its an amazing bike. The honda was a nice bike but hard work in harescrambles and enduros, had to put a vforce 3, hgs pipe, powerblade just to get the engine up to scratch.
KTM are also a good choice, very powerful motors and great ergonomics.
agree ktms are great bikes

2 stroke is cheaper to buy and rebuild and easier to maintain.
4 strokes are apparently the easier bike to ride, though ive only ever ridden 2 strokes.
cant go wrong with any of the big brands tbh.. you wont notice much of a difference in any of them.
no offence but your first bike youll be nowhere near the bikes capabilities and all this its faster shit wont make the blindest bit of difference.
remember mx is: 95% rider, 5% bike.
learning to ride is better than spending big

i always prefered the 2strokes!
Tbh matt if its fields etc what your going to be messing about on, id get anything cheap and which is 250cc 2stroke, the only problem i had with my KX was the CDI unit, the CR felt nicer to ride and was more powerful, but the KX will be more than "OK" for hacking about on a field Enjoy

i had a TM 250 ex racing crosser as my first bike, it was a quality bike way faster than my mates kx 250, only problem was it needed to be driven hard all the time or you would have to change the spark plugs every time you used it as they would get soaked.

As Jimmy said i ride.
Got a yz450f at the moment which is a complete monster and a big handfull!!
Just picked up a cr125 with a mate which is a minter, nippy too for what it is - if your just looking for something for green laning you ideally want a 4 stroke as their less revvy and not going through the gears every 2 mins like a 2smoker.
You get what you pay for - 2 strokes break much more but are cheaper to fix - i dont think i would go back to a 2 stroke now after buying my 450. - each to their own though.
Have a look on www.mxtrax.co.uk in classifieds.

Four stroke for green laning. They have "usable" power, ie, not having to keep it spinning to get some drive

i dont think i would to be honest, still a smoother and better bike to ride is the 4 stroke, i had a yz250 before, yeh i loved it but it was mental, saying that my 450 rides like a stroke as its up and down gears and pulls like one but thats due to the engine size no doubt lol

The thing with 4 strokes I find is there too smooth and the power feels flat compared to a 2 stroke (250 4 stroke vs 250 2stroke). undeniably the 4 stroke is a competent machine but you dont get the same kind of buzz as a big hitting 250 2 stroke, they feel like they want to take your arms off everytime you pin the throttle, and the throttle response is awesome.
It comes down to different riding styles in the end, a 2 stroke will always suit a more aggressive rider, where as with a 4 stroke its less manic and more competent at getting the power down suits the smoother rider down to the ground, a lot of people I know have gone to 250F's from a 2 stroke and most go back due to the riding style. Obviously something like a 450F would be a monster but thats more of a motocross bike than a trail bike

1992 is pretty old and the older bikes are dogs to ride. I'd look at something around 1998 onwards IMHO - it is worth the little extra cash.

yeah get 99 onwards as major changes were made then onwards.
Check: head bearings for play and leaking grease, wheel bearings, swing arm bearings (side to side and also the suspension linkage as 9 times out of 10 its siezed or fuked.)
compression on the kick start, smoking, also ask to take the seat off and check how clean the air filter is as if its black and covered in mud walk away.
K3 VMU - for clothing check ebay, or for new mxbits.com
