The cars and fuel are more expensive and it's still cheaper if you do the miles.

cheaper tax, by a fair bit(1.8 petrol in 2009 will cost £205, 1.9CDti will cost £150), better mpg (by about 10mpg over the 1.8 petrol)

Cost more in the first place, not really, shop around, will find they are there, same price, but have to do some work to find them.

And if they go wrong? petrol & diesel prices to fix are pretty much the same these days, diesels tend to go longer with more abuse, thats why you see them in 3 years time with 150 - 200k on them.

Thats a good price. Probably an ex-vxl management car/demo.

NO car is an investment. If your happy to swallow the depreciation then fair play. If your looking for a short term (1-2yrs) then you will get hit hard.

Right, I went with intentions of getting a diesel, but wasn't overly fussed. Saw this, and fell in love. Looked around a fairbit, and this has been the nicest I've seen so far. I don't want something stupidly fast etc, I'm aware it's a big, heavy car, but we just want it as our sensible everyday car as we currently have the 2.0 turbo corsa and the supertouring, also as I'm just starting in the police, I want something respectable that I can use for work....without turning up in a flame pink corsa with big exhaust. When I spoke to dealership, I'm buying this with the intention of trading it in in a year or so and getting the Vectra VXR then. I'm aware of the depretation etc, but thats life. Cheers for all advice so far

Wouldnt it be more cost effective to just buy something cheap to run for a year, then get the VXR then?

cool cheers, iv had a 1.6 astra, 2.0 astra, and partner has a 2.5 v6 vectra, so was guessing its somewhere in the middle i do a fair bit of driving, but all short journeys to farm etc twice a day and work, so need something decent on petrol. Not bothered about having a silly fast car, we have the other cars for that, but want it bit faster than my 1.4 corsa
