It will still run rich as it needs to measure air density and speed in order to get the stoich mixture correct.

It wont function correctly if it's in backwards because it has a heater element at the beginning of the tube which heats the air, and some sensors at the other end which measure the air temp as it exits the tube.

Most will run on a default setting, not advisable but ok for a few 100 miles .
