Call the college and tell them that you want to do it. There's no reason I can think of why you shouldn't be allowed to study a GCSE whatever age.
Keep your choice as focussed on your aims as possible. For midwifery you might be wise choosing some sciences alongside the standard Maths, English and IT.

Fair enough. What is it you want to get out of it at the end? As in what career do you want it to lead on to? You want to be back in education for the next 6yrs + ?

My sister did her GCSE's in Maths,Science and English to get onto an access to nursing course, she wants to be a midwife but they are currently only taking on 3 midwives a year in Rotherham/Sheffield.

Well she's in her final year, she's been working the wards for over 18months now and is compotent enough to assist in surgery, as she applied to be a theatre nurse to begin with.

Considered a national diploma? I havent read the thread properly and not sure what you really want to do. I got onto mine after AS level purely based on my portfolio. The course was an equivalent of 4 A levels. Cant believe you left school at 12 and thought you could just ring up a uni and get in though

You can do your gcse's at any age i thought, they might even just call it a 'certificate' that you did it.
although you are over 19 so you will need pay, but ifyour on benefits etc then i guess you dont need to pay
Just ring the college and explain you want to take english and maths gcse.
i left school with highest grade being a D or C, i was bullied so much, hated school !!!! but i still went (sometimes), but hardly went in my last year, im suprised they let me sit my exams.
You can study NVQ level 1 with a few gcse's and work your way through to level 2 and then 3 ??
book an app with the college to discuss what you want and what they can offer.

You should get 2 GCSEs for Science, 2 for English and 1 for Maths.
So really this is all you need.

Don't do GCSE's, really pointless stuff, they are only there as the next step of education. Pointless things.
Go straight into NVQ's, or formal qualifications for a job (IE, in IT, you'd do specialist IT courses, a GCSE IT simply won't cut it ).
Think about what you want to do, and go directly to those courses, the GCSE's really will be a waste of time.
Then your getting proper training thats designed for a job/career. Chances are, u'll catch on quick.

Dont you need to have your GCSE's to start an NVQ tho? otherwise you need to do the Key Skills bit?
