My Grandad was in the Navy and was one of the first foreign personnel to safely visit Hiroshima after the bomb. He didn't like talking about it, he didn't even speak to my Dad about it. Can only imagine the shit he saw.

My Dad's Dad fought in Germany and Italy as a normal nutcase soldier, not clear on his role, but my Mum's Dad was a ship general on a Brazilian guard ship in the Atlantic, both Grandad's were shot to bits but survived, plenty of scars, both deceased now.

I'd do almost anything to shake the hand of a D-Day veteran, one of the ones who stormed the beach i mean.

My grandad was a Desert Rat with i think the 7th Armoured Division, he was captured and made to work in Auschwitz by, again i think General Rommel? Id really love to know more but its really hard trying to find stuff on the internet.

Most of my family went to Auschwitz in 2005 not long after my grandad died, it was really intresting. I put a thread on here when we went but i cant find it now as search appears to be down, all the pics from the trip are here -

WWII is a huge massive interest of mine. I think me and some friends are going to drive from Normandy to Berlin stopping off at alot of the "important" places. Carentan, Bastogne etc etc

Each time when we've driven back from Snowboarding (French Alps) we've always talked about "bolting it on" to the journey....but they always fanny out of it.

My great grandad who passed last year or the year before served in WWI and WWII and was also part of the communications side, he would go out in the field as well, wish i knew him more to ask more questions and find out more!

My grandad served in the navy his whole life, and was one of the few to work on the Harrier whilst in production, hes now retired but once a year goes to the RAF/Navy bases to check through Harriers etc due to being one of the first few

One of my Grandads was in the REME. He was out in the Middle East alot during WW2 fixing jeeps and tanks and stuff. Got alot of cool photos.

My other Grandad couldn't sign up, as he had a badly deformed hand from when he put his hand in an industrial cake mixer as a boy. He couldn't hold a gun properly so wasn't allowed in. Although he was a great shot with his own shot gun?!

I think one of my Grandmas worked in a military hospital during the war and the other worked in a Post Office.

my grandad was a major in the secret service, would never tell me anything. Just a couple of stories. First to the scene at dover when a stukka had crashed. He was all for the war and kill the jerries etc. Then he saw the 19yr old kid in the pilot seat of the crashed stukka with bullet holes in him and said it made him realise the horror of war and how its the kids/people that fight the war and suffer not the inventor of the war...

He died in 2004, i miss him alot!

He travelled all over with the army and went to the likes of Africa and Egypt IIRC, met alot of characters too

mine did the same

My Grandad was training to be a doctor when the war broke out so was allowed to finish his training. He was sent to northern France a few weeks after D-Day once he'd finished training!
My Grandma worked in a factory in liverpool making Baily Brideges! Her brother was called up at 21, served in Dunkirk, Italy and D-Day and came out without a scratch on him!

shame he died in 1994, would have had so many questions for him. I remember the first german he shot was a dog... turned out to be a messenger dog so he didnt feel so bad afterwards lol.. he did parachute behind ememy lines.

really kick myself that i didnt find out more, but he never really openly talked about it.. We have hit medals hung up at home though

my uncle was in the submarines but again not sure what he did
