There is a lovely bakery close to the office that has been getting some hammering and nothing beats a nice on-route to site breakfast!

Just read my horoscope for today -
Changes to your workplace could be delayed. It feels like you've received a reprieve. The planned alterations will go through later in the year, so take this opportunity to make alternate plans. Finding a job in another field is advised. Explore opportunities related to broadcasting, technological support, or humanitarian aid. You're wonderfully versatile and knowledgeable, so you shouldn't have any problems breaking into a different industry. Resist the urge to tell an authority figure what you really think of their contributions.
Jeeez - Wish I hadn't read it now !

I have been doing quantity surveying for four years now, my first salary as a trainee was £18,000 but included no car allowance or any mileage towards my business travel. In my second year the salary stayed at £18,000 and i got the choice of a company car or a £4,000 car allowance per annum. I chose the company car, major mistake!!
I changed my job at the beginning of March and have taken a car allowance this time around which is £3,500 (car allowance vary going by company) and a healthy salary increase. I now have an ordinary degree and could demand another healthy salary increase if I leave uni. I could also stay at uni to get an honours degree which would further boost my earning potential come next summer.
Are you going to study for an HND/HNC at the Met or do you plan on going straight into a uni course?

Hi Gus thanks for that
I have no idea atm what type if courses they have in mind for me, although I know they had been looking at various college courses hopefully that will be discussed later today during my salary review. I've no QS qualifications just now and realise my salary would be based on this. I'll wait and see what they come up with today I just feel they're mucking me about a bit, its several months now since they approached me and asked if I would be interested in either training to be a Buyer or QS, I decided on QS but they're dragging there heels getting things moving and now have me buying for them with on salary increase

What company is it for? 14-16k plus them paying your college / uni fee's would probably be about right for a trainee with no qualifications. However I do have mates that started as trainee cad monkeys / project managers and were on 12k plus course fee's, suppose it all depends on the company. Just gotta think that in a few years it will be worth it once your qualified.
I recently started as a QS after realising my honours degree was a waste of time and there was little related jobs available to someone with no experience. So now I am doing a 2 years part time masters degree in surveying while working.

Buying can be a major part of QS work depending on who you work for, in my new job I buy all the materials for site as well as carrying out all of the day to day QS roles.
If possible going straight to uni to study part-time would be your best bet IMO, it takes 5 years to get an honours degree while you can have your ordinary degree in four years.
If I was you I would try to get definitive yearly salary increases written into your contract. You must also remember that they are paying your fees, which is around £1400 per year iirc so that figure is technically included in your yearly salary. And you will effectively only be working a four day week if you have one day a week to go to your course.
Let us know how you get on

In my humble views : Jades been taken on as Administrator, its a small firm, 7 office staff or whatever, only run 7/8 contracts at a time. Jades the only Administrator, theres no intent to replace her if/when she trains in QS. So to me it doesnt sound a good start, then theres the fact shes getting drawn in on the buying whenever its decided - something shes got no experience in. Personally I think the place is a shambles & they have no intent in making her a QS, more an Admin that can extend herself to cover other areas slightly but not see any rewards. Ive told her if theres no salary/training discussion today in concrete (like actually going to happen) to hand in her notice & look elsewhere.

Jade, the lack of pay review and salary increase has nothing to do with the fact you're on Corsasport during work hours?!

If they are fannying about maybe send some letters out to firms in your a re asking if they want a trainee, however times arent that great within private housing at the moment so might struggle. How about the council roads dept or something, could try them? Cushy holidays with the council!!
