I find a £500 Marin has a lesser spec to a £500 Trek, Giant or Spesh tbh

Agreed. And although Specialized seem good value, a lot of the parts are in house.

My Demo 7 cost £2k new. The frame alone (granted it has a better shock than mine) is approximately £1300 iirc. Then the forks are a fair amount on their own. It basically meant, in RRP terms, I got everything else on the bike free.

But at the £500 price bracket, most are going to be the same. Things like bottom brackets are easily upgradeable as and when, without spending a great deal of the price of the existing one.

Yeah, the marin is a worse spec imo.

But between all 3, the should all be similar to be honest.

As you said, whatever feels better!

Take it out for a ride round the carpark or something then

I work for a tiny company and my boss loves anything that has the word funding in it, plus I was chatting to him a few weeks back and he's keen that the people without kids get some other kind of benefits as the ones with kids can get paid in childcare vouchers (offers them a tax break) so I think he'll be up for it

On another point thinking the trek 6300 is slightly better specced than the rock hopper disc 08 and has a nice paint job

Kona Cindercone...

At that price you will be getting a decent bike, though comprimises will usually be made on the crankset and pedals. Expect the cranks to fail if you do anything too rough and just buy a decent set of pedals when you buy the bike.

Flats are for people that have to put a foot down

but seriously, for mixed XC and trail cliped are better. If your doing DH racing or hitting up tabletops with a superman seatgrab flats are better.

I've got V8s at the moment, but on a hardtail your better of being clipped up as the ride isn't as smooth as a full squishy.

No no, I totally agree. I've ridden clips for about 8 years and got very used to them. I rode them last year in France DHing. Everyone was saying "ooohhh, you don't want to use flats out here" and I didn't fall off once

But when dad and I started more freeriding, downhilling, big hucks etc we decided to go flats and it's much better.

However, when I do rides in the Peaks or Wales on flats, the climbs seem so so much harder now.

yes, you need shoes that take a cleat that clips into the pedal.

Specialised make the best SPD shoes. Shimano pedals are poo but Crankbrothers or Time are good though. I'll order some soon

my dad has a boat in the marina there and when the water is too rough i get a bit bored so bike rides would be a good alternative to boating.
