Great all rounder if you ask me.
If you want something quicker, buy an Astra VXR.

Not really, the new polo is about 1400kg.. 1200kg is very light for a modern car

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Curb (kerb) weight is the total weight of a vehicle with standard equipment, all necessary operating consumables (such as motor oil and coolant), a full tank of fuel, and not loaded with either passengers or cargo.
This definition may differ from definitions used by governmental regulatory agencies or other organizations, for example, many European Union manufacturers include the weight of a 75 kilogram driver in the total. Additionally, organizations may define curb weight with fixed levels of fuel and other variables to equalize the value for the comparison of different vehicles.
A gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is the maximum allowable total weight of a road vehicle or trailer that is loaded, including the weight of the vehicle itself plus fuel, passengers, cargo, and trailer tongue weight.

They are pretty capable cars imo. As Ian said, an all rounder that isn't as hard as a lot of less powerful cars to insure! And with the addition of a turbo, it's a hell of a lot easier to get more power from it than it would be an XE etc

Also, I think it'd be easier to live with every day, i.e. in traffic and slow moving traffic on the motorway. Although it may suffer from turbo lag, at least it won't be 'too quick' for everyday.

Can I encourage anyone who wants to make a comparison to do this objectively and not base it on feeling or inaccurate benchmarks. Its a quick car, some other cars are quicker, some are slower.
Driven well it's fast, driven poorly - not so.
Only fact I can contribute is that the one I drove was substantially quicker than the GSi which I own both straight line and handling. It's a good car.
