then it will prepare you well. One of the examples I used was telling my mam that my aunt had died, fooking difficult situation to be in but it does toughen you up a little.

How about attending a scene where a deranged father has decapitated his son and wife with a bread knife?

I have a degree. Makes no difference. I've applied for Devon & Cornwall (who are notoriously difficult to get into), Essex (although I didn't pass the paper sift, although the same form worked for D&C) and i'm waiting to apply for South Wales Police (who again are hard to get into)

welsh dan, do you know what the pass rates are for those forces? When I applied for Durham was told it has one of the highest pass rate %'s in the country, thusly harder to get into

Another thing I will say before joining, prepare to lose friends and have people think differently of you

Not sure on pass rates, but South Wales is hard to get into, on the basis that they have very few intakes. They last took on in July 06 (for 5 days!), and are alledgedly due to start recruiting 30 Officers sometime in the next 2 months, that will start training in late 2009/2010. They still have 180 coppers from that intake that have passed all the assessments/interviews etc. and are waiting to start training.
With regards to Devon & Cornwall, I believe that its hard to get into, because its a nice(ish) part of the world and everyone wants to go there to retire and work out their remaining years. Intake is a bit more frequent, but not sure on numbers for them.

Aye sounds a lot like Durham, they still have recruits from last years intake ready to start!

that is a great site with coppers etc on to ask any questions, also can find out about individual areas etc

don't know what its like down your way but in lancashire they tend not to even consider younger people despite the law saying you can join when you're 18. i looked into it when i was leaving college and the general consensus was go and do something like become a PCSO or something along those lines first, as it will greatly improve your chances if you can prove that you can do the job if that makes sense
not like it used to be though, my dad has recently retired from the police after his 30 years, he was in the cadets when he was 16 then joined up fully when he was 18. they let him in despite his aunty being married to a known member of the IRA

Im looking into the police force, wouldnt midn starting as a PCSO tbh, walking round all day would keep fitness up and you get a beginners view into real policing. Im doing a degree in Accountancy and Finance (so well related there ) so hopefully this would help towards the 'life experience' thing, and the fact I will have been running a house with my g/f, responsibility and all that, most probably a lot of 21/22 year olds still living at home with their mum's....
I do want to work in the traffic division though, never the same work, always see something different

I actually failed getting in as a PCSO, re-applied and got straight in as full constable. Some forces do seperate applications for PCSO and police constables, however what theyre starting to do is one application for both, then when you go to assessment centre, you must get certain % to get in at PCSO (say 50%), then say 60% to qualify as full police officer. I heard off the guy who is one down from cheif superindendant of northumbria force though that they are changing the rules so you can only go in as PCSO soon, then have to reapply for the job of police constable.
