How can they define the wrong name?
He could be paying the cash into anyones account, So the name could be mine or yours and it would still go.

The funds wont leave the account till this evening anyway, all they need to do is reverse the transactions.
If for any reson they have left they will take 4 days to transfer to the bank (which the sort code relates to) it will then reject and take a further 4 days to be returned so worst case is it may take 8 banking days to get your funds back.

no it wont be, im in charge of all large electronic transactions leaving the bank i work for, and out of the many many wrong account numbers funds get sent to, never once has one been a valid account number,
plus they take 4 days to transfer, so your bank will let the other bank know so the fund wouldnt ever end up in the customers account

Baskey, but if it is a genuine account number, and they are with the same bank, the money goes instantly so it's wrong to say he will get it back in 8 days at the latest as it isn't true
If the account he has sent it to is with the same bank as him it will go instantly, possibly leaving him out of pocket

True it will go in, but the chance of guessing random account number is slim to none, banks use randomish account numbers for this very reason.
Also every bank account will say in the terms and conditions that if money is paid in in error you are not intitled to it.
sometimes banks may not bother claiming the money back off the other party, even more so if its there fault but they will always pay the money back to the customer

A) Its not a slim chance to guess an account number if its a number or 2 different to yours.
B) Its not the bank's fault, Its his fault so the 'they always pay the money back' is bullshit. Its not there fault so they have no reason to re-imburse funds that were lost upon the accounts holders mistake.
Who do you work for out of intrest???

a, there wont be an account number with a digit or 2 differnet from yours with the same sort code, hence why the money going into someone elses account is so rare
B) No its not the banks fault but as you are a customer of the bank its there duty under the banking code to get the money back.
also if money has been placed into your account in error its illegal to spent it, end of.
