The dimmer switch doesn't make any diff to LEDs. It doesn't on mine anyway.

Course LEDs dim. If you reduce the voltage then the resistor has less current to counter, hence the LED dims. If you go too low on the voltage then they will go out. My speedo has close to 60 LEDs in it and believe me you can really see them dimming when the dimming wheels turned.

If they're dimming it's probably because you're not regulating them sufficiently well and they're operating above their design tolerance. This will mean they're getting hot and will fail earlier.

Cheap way of achieving more brightness but watch you don't melt the plastic or cause a dash fire.

No Ian I know what I'm doing with LEDs, they are all regulated to 14.4v. LEDs dim, it's not rocket science, as the voltage drops the resistor still keeps resisting up to it's capacity, so the voltage drops to say 2.3v, hence the LED dims as the semi conductor in the die gets less voltage.

If they're designed to run at 14.4v then sound. Try doing it with a 20ma 2v cheapo one.

I'm also not convinced that you'll a full range of dimming like you do with the incandescents. The range of operating voltage is not sufficiently wide. If you wanted proper dimming on an LED you would need to pulse the supply with a 555 or similar which of course is not how the dimmer unit works unless you modify it.

I don't think that really matters though Ian. The question was do LEDs dim, they do and are perfectly capable of it, running them dim actually extents their life due to them producing less heat.
Ok a car dimmer isn't perfect, but it does the job I suppose.

Where do I know your name from Ian? seems strangly familiar for some reason. You had a feature car in a car mag?
